Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago became a city in 1837 next to a channel between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River and grew rapidly in the middle of the 19th century [4]. After the Great Fire, which destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 people homeless, the city made significant efforts to rebuild [5]. A surge in construction accelerated population growth for several decades, and in 1900, less than thirty years after the fire, Chicago became the fifth largest city in the world. Chicago contributed to the development of urban planning and zoning, including new building styles, the development of the Beautiful City movement, and steel skyscrapers.
