Under the rule of the Norman and Anjou kings, England was part of the continental empire, and the long connection with France, which was maintained by the new rulers and landowners, greatly influenced the English language. This hybrid language, which combined Anglo-Saxon and Norman dialects, developed and became the de facto state language, sometimes even displacing Latin in public documents. This was the case until the middle of the 14th century, when the late Middle English language began to take shape, which later became the de facto state language.
The dialects of English spoken by the vast majority of Scotland's population are often singled out as a separate Scottish language, which can in fact be considered the national language of Scotland.

The English language was significantly influenced by the northern Germanic language and the West Germanic language. Modern English comes mainly from the Germanic dialects spoken by the English, Saxons and Utah (who came to Britain in the 5th century AD). English was also strongly influenced by the language of the Vikings, who invaded the British Isles around 790 and later colonized the north and east of England.

All the major languages spoken in the United Kingdom belong to the Indo-European family of languages.
Of the modern languages, the earliest are two forms of Celtic: Gaelic (from which Irish, Scottish (Gaelic) and Minsk) and British (from which the revived Cornish and modern Welsh languages). Among modern Celtic languages, Welsh is the most common language: about one-fifth of the total population of Wales considers it their mother tongue, and it is a compulsory subject in Welsh schools. Most Scottish speakers are native to the Outer Hebrides and Skye. Less than 2 percent of Scots can speak Scottish, and it has never been Scotland's national language. Even in the north-western regions, where it is the language of religion, business and social activities, the Scottish language lags behind. Similarly, the Minsk language no longer has native speakers, although in 1870, about half of the people spoke it. The last speakers of the Cornish language died in the 18th century, but now the language is being revived by enthusiasts.
