Practical Ways to Build Emotional Intelligence in Recovery

Mindfulness Practices: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help cultivate self-awareness and self-regulation.

Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other forms of counseling can enhance emotional understanding, develop healthier thinking patterns, and build resilience.

Journaling: Reflecting on emotions daily helps track emotional triggers, patterns, and progress in recovery.

Group Support: Group therapy or 12-step programs can strengthen empathy, communication skills, and offer perspective on shared experiences.

Identifying an alcohol or substance use disorder can be challenging, but there are signs and symptoms that can help you assess whether your use has become problematic. If you or someone you know is concerned, here are key indicators to look out for:

1. Inability to Control Use

Difficulty cutting down or stopping substance use, even if you want to.

Using more of the substance than you initially intended.

2. Neglecting Responsibilities

Failing to meet work, school, or home obligations due to substance use.

Prioritizing substance use over important activities or responsibilities.

3. Physical Dependence

Developing a tolerance, meaning you need more of the substance to achieve the same effect.

Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using, such as shaking, sweating, nausea, or anxiety.

4. Craving and Preoccupation

Frequent, intense urges or cravings to use the substance.

Spending a significant amount of time thinking about, obtaining, or using the substance.

5. Continued Use Despite Problems

Persisting with substance use even after facing negative physical, mental, or social consequences.

Recognizing that use is causing harm (e.g., relationship issues, declining health) but continuing anyway.

6. Interference with Daily Life

Substance use causing you to withdraw from social, work, or recreational activities.

Decreased participation in hobbies or activities that once brought joy.

7. Risky Behavior

Engaging in potentially dangerous activities while under the influence, such as driving or using heavy machinery.

Taking risks you wouldn’t normally consider when sober.

8. Health Issues

Experiencing health problems that can be directly linked to substance use.

Ignoring medical advice or health warnings related to substance consumption.

9. Denial and Concealment

Being secretive or defensive about the extent of your use.

Downplaying how often or how much you use.
