This makes me sad
On Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, the mall wasn't just a place to shop. It was where life happened.
You'd meet at the fountain because everyone knew where it was. You'd wander through record stores flipping through albums you couldn't quite afford. You'd spend an hour in the arcade trying to stretch five dollars into an entire evening.
Maybe you'd grab a slice, maybe you'd catch a movie, maybe you'd just walk laps and hope your crush showed up.
The mall was our social network before anyone had ever heard that phrase.
It was where first dates happened. Where friendships were built. Where teenagers got their first taste of independence without realizing it.
Parents dropped you off for a few hours, and for that little window of time, the world felt wide open.
The hum of fluorescent lights overhead. Music spilling out from every storefront. The smell of new sneakers, popcorn, perfume counters, and fresh pretzels all mixing together into something that somehow smelled exactly like being young.
Then somewhere along the way, things changed.
Shopping moved online.
Conversations moved to screens.
Weekends became deliveries instead of destinations.
Today, people can order almost anything from Amazon without ever leaving the couch, but convenience never replaced community.
The malls didn't disappear because the buildings stopped working.
They disappeared because we stopped gathering there.
Many of those places sit quiet now. Barricaded storefronts. Empty food courts. Arcades long gone.
The same halls that once felt like the center of the universe echo with memories instead of footsteps.
And maybe that's what makes it bittersweet.
Maybe we don't really miss the stores.
We miss the feeling of walking through those doors and knowing that somewhere inside, our friends, our stories, and our entire weekend were waiting for us.
