This is Dennis and my Father In-law, Tino(pops). The dynamic duo. I met them both at the same time actually.
I was invited over to dinner to meet the parents and Dennis.
Dinner was phenomenal, my Mother In-law, Audrey (Oma), cooked and she doesn’t miss.
I was trying to be on my best behavior. Pops was quiet but assertive. Oma was super welcoming, funny and sharp. Dennis is a presence to be experienced. You don’t want to mess with him and you definitely want him on your team. Dennis started cracking jokes. Some aimed at my father in-law. I had to make sure not to laugh at those. It was tough to though. He has the special ability to laugh. It’s a belly laugh from the depths of the center of his being. I think he can do it on command and I know he can keep it going. It went on and on and on; the table had erupted in laughter. Not at the original joke aimed at pops but at the laughter.
I felt like It was a test, on his part to me. I just tried to keep a straight face and shook my head in disapproval at the jokes aimed at my father-law.
Years passed and Yael got married so I think I may have passed at least some of the imaginary test I thought I was experiencing. I’ve grown to love these 2 men a lot. I’m grateful to have such a great relationship with my in-laws and the privileged to be introduced to their friends.
My shop would definitely not be what it is without them.

This is Henri.
We met at the shop I trained at in Berkeley. We connected on the EMT journey as he was interested in becoming one. As the years went on he started working on other passions like his super nice BMW but the medical side of things kept tugging at him.
He jumped in, became an EMT and when I say he jumped in, I mean he JUMPED in.
Doing ER tech stuff at Alta Bates. I get to hear about his experience & the shop becomes a place to decompress a bit. For me it’s really cool because I get to live vicariously through him.
I’m super proud of him. It’s not an easy job. It’s not a short shift job. It’s a lot of mitigating your own feelings while helping someone who is probably going through the worst day of their life. Staying calm, being kind, yet assertive, to help the patient stay calm and reassured that you and the team will give them the best care they can. Talk about customer service.
I remember doing ride alongs and clinical with Oakland Fire/ p-plus/west med and at Eden Hospital ER while also working at Texas Roadhouse and realizing the difference in patience for the customer service required. There were people that I treated that were bleeding out from a car accident due to a drunk driver or shot from a drive by in the town or a few OD’s and then the next day there were people freaking out because I forgot to bring Ranch or there wasn’t enough Freshly baked bread or honey cinnamon butter. The juxtaposition was crazy to me. It helped me stay calm and also realize how hungry people are really irrational at times lol.
I’m super proud of Henri. For pursuing his dream. Leaving no stone unturned in finding what drives him. For staying calm while gaining experience. If you haven’t experienced the other side of the medical world, it’s something else. Especially in a densely populated area like the bay with a housing/mental health/opioid crisis etc. major shout out to the EMTs/ Medics/ ER staff and Fire fighters.

This is Ty,
He’s been coming to Celso’s pretty much since it’s opening. He’s one of the smoothest people on the planet. Obviously.
His style and the way he Carrie’s himself definitely encompasses what I envision Celso’s to be, especially our evenings.
We were recently invited to the Italian Club in Oakland to join them for dinner. We got a chance to celebrate a very happy and lively gentleman who was turning 103 yrs old. The evening was definitely inspirational.
Looking forward to some evening events at the shop.

One of my favorite things about barbering is that it’s a constant learning experience. Not just in the craft of actually cutting hair but also because all walks of life come into the shop. David is a college professor of anthropology. I love history and I love talking to people who know more than I do. I have such a great time at the shop because, I surround myself with people that are smarter than me. Sure I pick David’s brain about humans but I really enjoy learning about teaching, leading, and learning how younger folks learn and how one adjust to change or updates in information and if technology/ access to scholars via social media have allowed us to go deeper into specific categories in the human experience, and is there better information outside of textbooks oh and of course “what do you think happens if, you know… aliens?” Any way, I really appreciate David, he comes all the way from Modesto. We snapped a few pics after the cut last week, I think he looks great in them.

These pictures make me smile. All I can say about our conversations in the shop is that they’re free and I mean they go everywhere.
As soon as see his name in the books, I’m like “let’s go!”
His style is not boring. None of it. The clothes, the hair, the music.
Thank you .alfred.prufrockstar

The real beauty of barbering is building relationships with people. I’m very grateful for this relationship that has been taking place over the last few years. Our conversations range from our love of performing arts to adventures with friends. Recently we had a chance to tie that in together with Fidelio at the SF Opera where my wife and I went for a date and I got a chance to introduce them to each other.
All that was thanks to him. These memories and blessings in life for me, are thanks to barbering, more importantly, thanks to relationships.
Talk to each other out there. Get to know your neighbor, barista, or whoever you cross paths with even for a brief minute. It’s worth it. It makes life memorable and fun. Thanks.
