Bohlale Mphahlele, a 16-year-old student from South Africa, designed a safety earring prototype to help protect people—especially women—from violence. The innovation responds to growing concerns around gender-based safety.

The device looks like an ordinary earring but contains a hidden camera and an alert system. When triggered, it can capture an image, share the user’s location, and send emergency notifications to preselected contacts. While some reports suggest it can alert authorities, official integration with police systems has not yet been implemented.

Bohlale presented her invention at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, where it earned recognition for its creative and practical approach to personal safety. Her work highlights how young innovators are using technology to tackle urgent social challenges.
