Few words from Katelynn:
❤️🙏🏻
I’ve been a little quiet while I’ve been recovering & recharging since being home from the hospital so I just wanted to give a lil update 🌟
If you missed it in previous updates - I was supposed to have the second 1/2 of my skin graft done on October 1st. Unfortunately my insurance denied it, even though the first 1/2 was complete & the skin was already removed from my arm. With lots of back & forth, miscommunications, an appeal, several trips up to Portland, lots of frustration, confusion & A LOT of tears - the past few weeks have been beyond exhausting.
I am relieved to say that I will finally be having my surgery tomorrow morning back up at OHSU. They will be using a graft from my thigh to cover the exposed site on my forearm. I would be lying if I said that seeing my nerves & tissue isn’t starting to mess with me, so the timing could not be more divine. This surgery will be much shorter & less invasive than my previous one, but anxiety is definitely settling in. I am excited to move past this chapter & onto the next.
I have a radiation consult appointment scheduled Monday, which brings a whole other level of anxiety. I have just finally gotten to the point where I’m feeling better, wearing real clothes (mostly lol), just got independence back with showering, even have had a few days of makeup and maybe a blow dry or 2! My doctors are doing their best at prepping me for what radiation might look like & though I’ll find out more Monday, I know it’s going to be rough for a little while..
Going to pull back out my famous line that got me through my hospital stay & the rough parts of recovery at home - “It’s better than having cancer.”
Trying my best to maintain an attitude of gratitude has really helped me get through the stress & pain of all of this. I am thankful that my trach site has healed almost completely. I am thankful that I have had an increased appetite. I am thankful that my swelling in my tongue has reduced so much. I am thankful that my speech has improved drastically. I am thankful for movement. I am thankful for October.
To Mike for keeping me uplifted & laughing, my parents for always showing up, my dogs for keeping me sane, my grandmas for keeping me fed, my family & friends for keeping me encouraged, Rachelle for being the best babysitter in the world, my salon girls for being my biggest cheerleaders & to everyone single person who has texted, messaged, called, prayed, sent flowers/gifts/donations & everything in between - thank you. It is hard for me to put into words how much I appreciate everyone who has stepped up for me, but I am eternally grateful 🫶🏻
Onto the next chapter ✨
Thank you!!!! ❤️
Cheers to everyone who helped support Katelynn, I wish we could have more winners but…. Joan Kruger you are the winner of our fundraising basket!🙌🏼🙌🏼

The update for today is not one that is easy for our family and has been really a difficult for my girl. She was scheduled for the second procedure for 10/1 at ohsu to skin graft her leg to repair the arm which is where they pulled the tissues to repair the tongue where they removed the cancer. They had intended to have the trach site to go in and administer her anesthesia for this second procedure which is why she has had to leave this in since coming home. The trach site is extremely painful but not nearly as painful as the arm which we have had to keep open essentially and packed in order to stay alive for the 10/1 procedure: Yesterday we got news her insurance denied the second surgery. The Dr did an urgent appeal to the denial and this morning we received a second denial. This surgery is imperative in this process and so we are now shuffling to figure out what now. Please continue to hold our girl in your thoughts and prayers 🙏
On a brighter note her emotional support dog Koda is hard at work. Katelynn remains as positive as she can. We are settling into a routine at home to support all of her needs despite having to spend hours trying to negotiate how she moves ahead with this recent information.
I have not ever been more proud of her strength and resilience in all of this when it feels so fu***ng overwhelming. ♥️(Mom)

We are at the apartment getting things dialed in! Second day much better than first 🙏 so far I would say my grade in nursing is a solid B lol room for improvement but patient got out for a walk! Eating and spirits pretty good considering. Today we may venture out to my house for a quick change of scenary! So happy it seems like today may be cooler!

Well folks that's a wrap! Katelynn is headed home for the next section of recovery!!! A few huge wins the last few days ❤️ she was able to eat yesterday real (puréed) food and coffee!!!! They removed the tube feed this morning since her appetite is good and she pushed to meet her calorie goals. We also had the pathology on the lymph nodes back which was negative for cancer!!!!! However road doesn't end quite yet; she will be back for another skin graph in a couple weeks and radiation to follow for 6-8 weeks. The last ten days were brutal BUT this beautiful badass took each stride as a champ. We are leaving here with spirits high!!! She's already excited about her first Dr P! Thank you all for the continued outpouring of love and support. We have felt it daily 🙏(mom)
