There's something important about breast health that doesn't get talked about enough: the warning signs can look different depending on your skin tone.
Breast cancer warning signs don't always look the same. On darker skin tones, redness may appear deep pink, purple, or simply different. Texture and swelling are sometimes easier to feel than see. Our latest article, featuring Nekisha Killings, MPH, IBCLC of The Melanated Mammary Atlas®, covers what to look for.

Your Next Right Step: What to Expect From a Breast Biopsy
A breast biopsy referral can feel like a weight you weren't prepared to carry. It's worth knowing that most biopsies are quick, minimally invasive procedures, and the majority of results come back benign.
At Akira Medical Imaging + Wellness, our Core Needle Breast Biopsy is performed with precision imaging guidance, so your provider has the clearest, most accurate picture possible. Our team is trained to walk you through every step, answer your questions, and make sure you feel informed before, during, and after your procedure.
Akira brings more than 35 years of oncology expertise to every patient interaction. When next steps feel uncertain, that depth of support matters.
If you or someone you care about has been referred for a biopsy, we welcome you to reach out. You don't have to navigate this alone.

Did you know that 75-80% of breast biopsies come back BENIGN?
Many don't realize this when they hear they need a biopsy. Remember, a recommendation for a biopsy isn't a diagnosis, it's your care team ensuring you get accurate answers, not guesses.

Collaboration is key to building healthier, more informed communities.
This week, we had the pleasure of hosting the team from Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region for a tour and a thoughtful discussion on how we can strengthen our partnership and create more meaningful connections in the community.
We’re looking forward to continuing this collaboration and the impact we can make together.
Showing up matters. 💜
This March, the Akira team had the privilege of tabling at the Black Family Wellness Expo, and it was exactly the kind of reminder we needed about why this work is so important.
Black and Hispanic women in our community face real, documented gaps in care. In how their symptoms get heard. In outcomes. In access to the kind of early screening that changes everything. That's not abstract to us. It shapes how we operate every single day.
This April, in honor of Minority Health Month, we're doing what we try to do year-round: making sure every woman who comes to Akira actually feels like she belongs there.
Not just welcomed. Actually seen.
If you or someone you love has been putting off a mammogram, a well-woman visit, or any other screening, we want to be the place that makes that easier. Our team is here, and we're ready for you.

Today is National Doctor's Day, and we could not let it pass without taking a moment to say thank you.
We are all so grateful to work alongside the exceptional physicians at New York Oncology Hematology (NYOH), whose partnership strengthens the care we can offer our community every day.
To the doctors in our lives and in our community: thank you for the compassion you bring every day. Happy National Doctor's Day. 🩺

Ever wondered what a breast ultrasound actually does?
A breast ultrasound uses soundwaves to create detailed images of breast tissue, helping your care team determine whether a mass is fluid-filled (like a cyst) or solid, and guiding next steps with confidence.
It's non-invasive, quick, and one of the tools we use to make sure you have clear answers when you need them most.
Have questions about breast ultrasound or whether it might be right for you? Drop them in the comments, or tap the link in our bio to request an appointment.

Ten minutes. No needles. No prep. No big deal.
If you have never had a DEXA scan before, here is what to expect:
• It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish
• It is completely painless and non-invasive
• It uses very low radiation
• You lie comfortably on a padded table while the scanner does its work
• You leave with information that can guide your care for years to come
A DEXA scan measures your bone mineral density, giving you and your care team a clear picture of where your bone health stands. It can catch early bone thinning (osteopenia) before it progresses to osteoporosis, often long before any symptoms appear.
Most patients tell us they are surprised by how simple it is. We love hearing that.
Ready to check in on your bone health? Schedule your DEXA scan at Akira via the link in our bio.
