An Important Update Regarding Racially Motivated Shooting at Oñate Statue Rally:

⚠ TRIGGER WARNING: Gun Violence, Racism, Colonialism ⚠

Dear Relatives,

Hours ago, a shooting occurred at a prayerful rally where NDN Collective staff were present in solidarity with our relatives from and , celebrating the postponement of the planned resurrection of a statue of a brutal colonizer Juan de Oñate on Tewa lands in so-called Española, New Mexico. An agitator (later identified as Ryan Martinez) wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat showed up and eventually charged toward the ceremonial alter at the rally, which was surrounded by women and children. When Martinez was kept back by protectors of the space, he pulled out a concealed weapon and shot a relative who put their body between the women and children for their protection. Martinez was apprehended shortly after.

While our relatives on the ground and those in relationship with them gather to support each other, our team is holding space for this moment and saying prayers for justice– in this situation of targeted violence, and the greater fight against racism, right-wing extremism, and colonialism.

It is not lost on us that this moment further underscores the legacy of violence that Indigenous people continue to face on our own lands. We do this work in the spirit of our ancestors and ending violence against all Indigenous Peoples.
We will continue to share updates and an official press response will be forthcoming from NDN Collective and our partners on the ground. Our demands still hold true.

In prayer and solidarity,

The Team
