Almost 4,000 separate lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of Ozempic with the Plaintiffs claiming they suffered severe debilitating symptoms and that the manufacturers failed to adequately warn the users of these risks. The litigation is primarily divided into two main categories: gastrointestinal injuries and vision loss.
1️⃣Stomach Paralysis (Gastroparesis): Plaintiffs allege that Ozempic and similar GLP-q drugs cause severe gastroparesis (stomach paralysis), bowel obstructions, and other dangerous gastrointestinal injuries. There are thousands of ongoing lawsuits consolidated in a Federal MDL (MDL No. 3094) in Pennsylvania. Plaintiffs are required to present objective medical proof like gastric emptying studies to support their claims. Novo Nordisk maintains that the benefit-risk profile of their medications remains positive and argues that diabetes itself can be an independent cause of gastroparesis.
2️⃣Permanent Blindness or Vision Loss (NAION): Emerging lawsuits claim that Ozempic causes a rare, serious condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which is essentially an eye stroke that often leads to permanent blindness in one or both eyes. A multicounty litigation (MCL) and a dedicated Federal Vision Loss MDL have also been established. Medical researchers are actively studying whether GLP-1 drugs cause this condition. Studies—such as one published in JAMA ophthalmology—have investigated the association between semaglutide drugs and NAION, with some research indicating a potential increases risk, although it is considered very rare.
