With rapid habitat destruction and rising light pollution threatening their survival, scientists warn that fireflies are vanishing.

In fact, things are so bad that we may be the last humans to ever see them.

Across the globe, these beloved bioluminescent beetles are facing an ecological crisis, with populations declining rapidly. The loss is primarily driven by habitat destruction, pesticide use, rising temperatures, and light pollution, which disrupts the dark environments fireflies strictly depend on to reproduce and survive.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, fireflies act as vital predators of pests and critical indicators of broader ecosystem health, meaning their fading presence signals a deeper threat to the environment
To halt their disappearance, conservationists are calling for immediate community and policy action.

Key steps include restoring essential wetlands, reducing artificial nighttime lighting, and embracing sustainable agricultural practices before these living stars are relegated permanently to digital screens.

Outside a women’s prison in Washington state stands a greenhouse full of life. Trays of host plants hold tiny butterfly eggs and black, yellow-dotted larvae inching slowly across leaves.

This is where the endangered Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly is being brought back from the brink.

For Margaret Taggart, who began working as a butterfly technician while incarcerated, the experience went beyond conservation work. “To be able to nurture something, to take care of a creature that emerges as this beautiful butterfly, that’s just so fulfilling,” she says.

Since 2011, the prison conservation program has helped raise and release more than 80,000 caterpillars into restored prairie habitat. Participants can also earn college credits in ecology and animal husbandry while contributing to scientific research.

“It gave me a belief in myself that I can learn and grow,” Taggart says.

Lavender cuttings root because the plant is hardwired for survival in harsh Mediterranean climates. When a branch touches dry ground or gets buried by shifting soil, it sends out roots from dormant nodes along the stem. This ancient adaptation means every healthy stem carries the blueprint for a complete new plant. The key is timing your cuts when the plant has stored enough energy but before it goes dormant. Those nodes below each leaf pair contain clusters of cells that can become either roots or shoots depending on what the cutting needs. Strip the bottom leaves because they would rot in soil and compete with root development for the plant's limited energy. Sandy soil mimics lavender's native rocky hillsides where drainage prevents root rot. In 3-4 weeks, you will have created something that took nature thousands of years to perfect. RESTORING NATURE: Mosquitoes are best controlled at the larval stage, not as adults. Female mosquitoes bite for a blood meal before laying eggs in standing water. In locations where water can’t be dumped, mosquito dunks and bits can be used. BTi (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a natural soil bacterium which is the active ingredient in these products, kills mosquito larvae without harming birds, beneficial insects, or other wildlife.

Entomologist Dr. Douglas Tallamy advocates for using a mosquito bucket that acts as a trap. It creates an irresistible breeding site with water and straw, dead leaves, or grass clippings and then shuts it down with the addition of BTi dunks.
