A woman stood in a Dallas sales office watching a man she herself had trained get promoted above her at double her salary, and rather than accept it quietly the way she was expected to, she went home and started writing down every single thing she believed a company ought to do differently if it were ever run by someone who actually valued the people selling for it.
Mary Kathlyn Wagner was born in the small Texas community of Hot Wells in 1918, raised largely by a mother who worked long hours to keep the family afloat while young Mary Kay learned early what hard work and responsibility looked like up close. She went into direct sales as a young woman, hosting living room parties the same way so many working women of her era did, and she turned out to be remarkably good at it, rising through company after company only to keep watching men she had personally trained get promoted over her. At forty five years old, with a notebook full of ideas about how a company should actually treat the women selling for it, she decided to stop writing the advice book she had originally planned and build the company herself instead. With five thousand dollars of her own savings and her twenty year old son Richard Rogers helping run the numbers, she opened a five hundred square foot storefront in Dallas in September 1963 with nine saleswomen and a skin cream formula she had personally purchased the rights to. She built the whole business on a simple principle, that if a company treated its people and its customers exactly the way it wanted to be treated, everyone involved would eventually profit. The company turned a profit its very first year, and within a few decades Mary Kay Cosmetics had grown into a Fortune 500 company operating in dozens of countries, with hundreds of thousands of women worldwide building their own independent businesses under the same principle she had started with.
By the time she passed away in 2001, Mary Kay Ash had helped create more self made women millionaires through her own company than almost any other business built in American history, proof of what one Texas woman could do once she decided nobody else needed to give her permission first. Texas has built empires in cattle and oil, but Mary Kay Ash built hers on the simple belief that women deserved the same opportunity to build something of their own. 💄
