Sony Discman, 2001, now in a museum. (Used by ancient teenagers to listen to Linkin Park and pretend life was hard).

The Sony Discman , a portable CD player that once ruled backpacks everywhere, now sits behind museum glass. In its prime, this little blue spaceship ran on AA batteries, skipped violently if you jogged too hard, and required a binder of CDs the size of a phone book.

By 2001, portable CD players were at peak popularity. The original Discman launched in 1984, but by the late ’90s and early 2000s, anti-skip protection (often 40+ seconds of buffered audio) made them almost… almost… portable.

Teenagers used them to blast Linkin Park, Blink-182, and mix CDs burned at 4x speed while dramatically staring out car windows.

Added fact: Global CD sales peaked in 2000 at nearly 2.5 billion discs sold worldwide, just before MP3 players and the iPod began making portable CD players obsolete within a few short years.
