The photo, from the Fort Supply Collection, shows White Horse (left, Kiowa) and Little Robe (right, Cheyenne).

By the spring of 1870, the Quaker Indian agent Brinton Darlington proposed moving the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency south from Camp Supply to a new location. He felt the soldiers at the camp were a bad influence on his charges. As the time grew near to shift the Agency south, the Cheyenne became reluctant to leave. The Cheyenne liked the location of Camp Supply, there was an abundance of buffalo nearby. They felt the new site was inferior, though Darlington believed it was better farmland.

On May 3, Darlington began his journey down the North Fork of the Canadian River to the site of the new agency. He was followed the next day by nearly all the Arapaho lodges and by all of the Cheyenne who had been staying at Camp Supply.

The Arapaho camped in the vicinity of the new agency, but the Cheyenne steadfastly refused to join them. Bull Bear’s and Medicine Arrow’s bands maintained camps eighty miles up the Beaver, slowly moving north, while the remaining Cheyenne lodges clustered near the Wash*ta, at the Kiowa and Comanche Sun Dance site.

The Kiowa Medicine Lodge was held in May 1870 and lasted for ten days. Delegations of Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, Comanche, and Cheyenne freely discussed the question of war or peace. When the war pipe was passed, only one Cheyenne chief, Whirlwind, a man without influence, accepted it. The grand council then broke up, and warriors dispersed. Little Heart, with a party of Kiowa and Kiowa-Apache, headed for Camp Supply. White Horse and his gathering of Kiowa and Comanche went to Fort Sill. Satanta and Kickingbird took their bands into the Texas panhandle where there were virtually no whites and plenty of buffalo. Cheyenne under Little Robe and Big Horse went peacefully to the new agency, but the uncommitted main band went to the headwaters of the Wash*ta to hunt buffalo.

Crazy Horse – A Sacred Hero
Crazy Horse was born on the Republican River about 1845. He was killed at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in 1877, so that he lived barely thirty-three years.
He was an uncommonly handsome man. While not the equal of Gall in magnificence and imposing stature, he was physically perfect, an Apollo in symmetry. Furthermore he was a true type of Indian refinement and grace. He was modest and courteous as Chief Joseph; the difference is that he was a born warrior, while Joseph was not. However, he was a gentle warrior, a true brave, who stood for the highest ideal of the Sioux [Lakota.] Notwithstanding all that biased historians have said of him, it is only fair to judge a man by the estimate of his own people rather than that of his enemies.

"The old Lakota was wise. He knew that a man's heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for living things soon led to lack of respect for humans. So, he kept his children close to the influence of nature." !

A LAUGH FOR TODAY❤
When NASA was preparing for the Apollo moon landings of the late 60s and early 70s, they did some astronaut training along a Navajo Indian reservation in the SW. One day, a Navajo elder and his grandson were herding animals and came across the space crew. The old man, who only spoke Navajo, asked a question, which the grandson translated: "What are the guys in the big suits doing?" A member of the crew said they were practicing for their trip to the moon." … See more
