San Francisco has filed a major lawsuit against several of the world’s largest food companies, accusing them of contributing to a growing public health crisis through the widespread production and marketing of ultra-processed foods.

The lawsuit, filed by San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, targets major corporations including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, General Mills, Nestlé, Kellogg, Mars, ConAgra, and Post Holdings. City officials claim these companies knowingly produced and promoted highly processed foods that are linked to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

According to the complaint, many of these products were engineered using combinations of sugar, fat, salt, and additives designed to maximize consumption. The city argues that companies used scientific research, marketing strategies, and product development to make foods extremely appealing while downplaying potential long-term health risks.

Officials say ultra-processed foods now make up roughly 70 percent of the American diet. San Francisco claims the widespread consumption of these products has contributed to serious health problems and placed increasing pressure on healthcare systems.

The lawsuit also alleges deceptive marketing practices, particularly advertising directed at children and vulnerable communities. The city is seeking financial damages to help cover healthcare costs linked to diet-related diseases and is asking the court to force changes in how these products are marketed.

The case is expected to face strong opposition from the food industry, but it represents one of the most significant legal challenges yet against the ultra-processed food sector.
