I’ve tested out of level one, so you know what that means!! Time to level up, babyyyy! Working on this extension certification is so fun, y’all, and my sweet mentor Heidi has been super helpful and encouraging! Now to get my sweet mama to agree to come spend some time with me in the salon in the next week or two… 😏 (Should be pretty easy - I think she likes me.) In other news… I’m getting to manage my brain a lot this week about several different circumstances in my life, including (but not limited to) the fact that I’m not yet flawlessly installing beads. 🙄

Okay, who wants to nerd out a little bit about hair with me? 🤓

Let’s talk today about peptide bonds, specifically. These bonds are some of the “glue” that holds together the building blocks that constitute the structure of hair.

There are a few different kinds of bonds found inside each hair strand. Peptides are covalent bonds that link individual amino acids together to form polypeptide chains of keratin. These are the chains (or building blocks) that give the hair its core strength and elasticity.

Covalent bonds are the strongest of the bond types, but they can still be broken by chemicals and heat which can alter and compromise the internal structure of the hair. It’s important to mitigate such potential damage when performing chemical services like hair coloring, and this is particularly true with any lightening services like foil highlights or balayage.

So I told y’all I got some extensions, right? I’ve been wearing them for about six months now, and I officially cannot imagine going back to doing life with the wimpy hair I used to have. Like, how did I even stand it??

That said, I’m considering getting certified in the method my amazing stylist Stephanie Shaffer uses on me. It’s called Invisible Bead Extensions & it’s a total game changer! You can wear your hair up or down, and you cannot see the wefts.

So tell me, friend… If I were to go after that certification, would you consider getting extensions? They can be for additional length or thickness, or both. I initially got two rows for added length and thickness, and in just six months my natural hair has now grown out to almost the same length as my extension hair!

It really is super interesting noticing how people look at me/my hair now. It’s no longer a thing to pity or fret about. I’m now confident that my hair pretty much always looks good, and when I feel confident, it helps me to show up as my whole authentic self. And the compliments… I’ll just say it like this - I’m definitely not the only one who loves my hair now. 🥰

Old folks (like me), listen up. If you’ve ever wondered what it means to be a “whole vibe,” I’m pretty sure this kid is it. 90’s heart throb meets 70’s flower child & I’m all 😍✌️🫶 about it.

Androgynous is the new black, for sure, and I am 100% here for it. It doesn’t hurt that as I was styling this cute cut, they were “practicing their smolder” in the mirror. I mean, come ON! Nobody was this cool when I was in high school. NOBODY. Just saying.

Love you mean it, Adah B! You’re the most hip. 💜

Sometimes, a brand new guest shows up for a visit & I can just tell immediately that she’s my people. She booked her own balayage + haircut appointment online (my FAVORITE services to provide), showed up on time, driving a Jeep (iykyk) & asked me to say less when I was explaining the treatment her hair needed. Yes ma’am, can do! I’ll just make your hair look dreamy & shut up about it then. 🤐😆😍

But like.. can we all take a sec to appreciate these eyes though?! What a beauty!

I’m considering getting this line tattooed on my forehead. Okay, maybe not my forehead… But perhaps my wrist? Somewhere I will see it often & be reminded that compassion for myself is always available to me. I must simply summon up thoughts that create that feeling.

Some such thoughts:

It makes sense that I would keep thinking that even though I know it’s not true.

Nothing has gone wrong here.

That’s just my brain trying to protect me again.

It’s okay that my brain keeps offering that old, well-practiced thought. That doesn’t mean I have to believe it.

All I’ve ever done is the best I knew how to do with the information I had at the time. Same goes for today. And that’s all I’ll ever be able to do. And that’s all exactly as it should be. 💜♾️
