Recently I visited Sarah of and it was delightful.

When I first walked in my eyes were engaged by all the new and interesting products on her shelves and by the bright and open space.

After getting settled in I had an eyebrow wax followed by a specialized facial and the most relaxing scalp massage.

For the month of May, and in honor of Mother's Day....introducing the Wildflower Facial....

This is a sixty minute hydrating + calming facial, suitable for all skin types!

The facial begins with a warm milk cleanser, infused with botanicals, followed by a gentle enzyme exfoliation, (and extractions if needed). A warm honey mask with steeped chamomile is applied to the skin while Transcend (a moisturizing and soothing massage balm) is massaged into the scalp. This balm melts into oil on contact and stimulates the crown chakra.

This treatment also includes lymphatic drainage massage using Azulene oil, and a warm chamomile hand and foot treatment.

Skin, our largest organ, is also our first line of defense. It is covered with a protective film that helps protect against pathogenic bacteria and helps the skin retain moisture.

It also contains an ecosystem of bacteria (our microbiome) which helps protect us from external stressors, as well as being linked to our gut’s microbiome — which is why gut health is so important; everything is connected.

When our barrier is disrupted, it means this film is no longer doing its job, and our skins microbiome is impaired. Pathogenic bacteria, and other microorganisms have a free pass, and they go right to work, triggering inflammation.

If your skin is constantly dry and flaky, exfoliation is not the answer. Doing so will only continue this vicious cycle. Instead, nourish, hydrate and protect the skin (especially at night) to allow the barrier to repair itself.

If your skin is red and bumpy you *may* have Rosacea; a skin barrier disorder. Although no cure, here are a few things you can do to help:

+ Work on repairing and strengthening your skin’s barrier. Lay off the exfoliants, ditch the elaborate skincare routine, avoid products with fragrance/colors. Keep it simple.

+ Improve your gut health by eating both prebiotic and probiotic foods. Supplements like an Omega-3 fatty acid and Zinc may also be helpful.

A special mention about medication: to be honest, more times than not it’s a bandaid. If you want lasting relief, you have to address what you’re doing topically, and what you’re ingesting.
