Meech The Barber

Today I had the honor of volunteering as a barber at the 16th Annual Men’s Health Event in Detroit, hosted by the Michigan Men’s Health Foundation.

Being able to use my craft to serve men who may not always have access to the care they need was a blessing. Sometimes a haircut is more than a haircut. it’s dignity, confidence, conversation, and care.

Today I had the opportunity to return to the University of Michigan campus and cut hair for M.C.L.I.C. I believe this makes year 4 or 5 of being invited back, and I never take opportunities like this for granted.

I’m grateful to share that I’ve been featured in Voyage Michigan for the second time. 🙏🏾💈

This interview hits a little differently because I had the opportunity to really reflect on the journey from graduating barber school, cutting hair out of my parents’ garage during the pandemic, opening my own spaces, experiencing setbacks and slow seasons, to traveling, teaching, representing brands, building my mobile business, and continuing to evolve.

One thing this journey has taught me is that growth doesn’t always look like growth while you’re going through it.

Sometimes you have to pivot. Sometimes you have to start over. Sometimes you have to bet on yourself before you can see where it’s all leading.

I also shared a little about the book I’m currently working on and why I believe this story is bigger than barbering. My hope is that it reaches anyone who has ever had to reinvent themselves, keep going when the original plan didn’t work, or believe that their gift could become something greater.
