Estimates suggest that about 12% of the population experiences migraines (range from 2.6% to 21.7%; average 12%). Migraines can be debilitating and significantly affect quality of life. My personal experience has been that feverfew and magnesium are helpful supplements to reduce migraine occurrence. In addition, topical essential oils can be very helpful.

A double blind, double arm, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot clinical study evaluated the effects of anise essential oil against migraine headaches. Men and women that experienced at least two migraine attacks per month applied 2 mL of anise essential oil (7% dilution in a cream base) on the temples and forehead at the onset of migraine. The placebo group applied a cold cream with no essential oil on the same locations of the head at the onset of migraine. The group that applied anise essential oil experienced significant reductions in the frequency and duration of migraine when compared to the placebo group and required fewer analgesic medications.

To approximate the study, add 15 drops of anise essential oil to a 10 mL roller bottle and fill the rest with carrier oil. Apply the oil generously to the temples and forehead at the onset of migraine. Other oils that are beneficial include peppermint, lavender, basil, rosemary, hinoki, copaiba, German chamomile, and fennel.

More than 10% of the adult population has high cholesterol, with the number of people experiencing this increasing with age. Several essential oils have been investigated in preclinical models for their ability to reduce cholesterol. After discovering that melissa essential oil reduces total cholesterol and triglycerides in laboratory research, researchers evaluated the benefits of oral administration of melissa essential oil in a preclinical model. What they found was that oral administration of melissa essential oil reduces triglycerides by altering several lipid metabolic pathways, including bile acid and cholesterol creation (synthesis), and fatty acid metabolism.

One of my favorite DIYs since switching to products without all the yucky stuff!🍃
I just made my laundry detergent since I ran out! The best thing is this laundry detergent comes in a 32oz bottle and it says you get 64 loads BUT with this hack, I make it into THREE BOTTLES which makes 64 loads turn into more❗️ this will last me about 4 months before I need to make another batch and it only costs $30.75⁉️ if you do the math on how many loads you will get it’s totally worth it❗️Friends if you don’t know about fragrance and how it affects your body please look into it❗️
👏Bonus: NO DYES, SLS, petrochemicals, formaldehyde, phosphates, synthetic perfumes, chlorine, & optical brighteners💚
It’s formulated with gentle, plant-based cleansers that are safe forward everyone even people with sensitive skin🥰
To make just divide equally into 3 32 oz bottles, fill with water.
Thanks@blendswell_with_others for this great idea!

A healthy gut microbiome is vital for overall health, influencing gastrointestinal health, immunity, mood, cognition, cardiovascular function, pain, and more. The gut microbiome changes throughout life from intrinsic (e.g. stress) and extrinsic factors (e.g. diet and drugs). Research suggests that early colonization of Bifidobacterium and Collinsella populations in children during the first months of life supports healthy childhood development and growth. Low populations of Collinsella bacteria are observed in adults with irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, low Collinsella colonization in the microbiome is associated with higher morbidity and mortality after infections, suggesting that these bacteria may mitigate infection and reduce symptom severity.

A clinical study investigated the effects of ingesting peppermint essential oil on the gut microbiome in children aged 7 to 12 with functional abdominal pain. Children were assigned to three different dosage groups (180 mg once daily, 180 mg twice daily, and 180 mg three times daily) and the assigned dosage was taken in capsules for one week. At the end of one week, there was no significant difference in alpha diversity (a measurement of the richness and balance of the microbial community) from pre- and post-intervention; however, a marked increase in Collinsella bacteria was observed in all groups. In addition, the firmicutes/bacteroidetes ratio was lower in children who received the highest dose of peppermint oil. Firmicutes/bacteroidetes ratio is considered a health biomarker that is disrupted in obesity, metabolic disorders, and inflammatory conditions. While more research is necessary, especially of longer duration, it suggests that peppermint oil ingestion can improve populations of important microbiota in the gut.

A recent study evaluated 369 commercial essential oil combinations for their support of healthy respiratory function during respiratory infections. Combined essential oils showed a synergistic antimicrobial effect, reduced toxicity, and improved anti-inflammatory properties. Five combinations were the most promising, including cypress/tea tree, hyssop/rosemary, marjoram/tea tree, oregano/tea tree, and myrtle/tea tree. These combinations can be diffused, steam inhaled, or diluted and applied to the chest to support open airways and healthy respiratory system function.

Diabetics have impaired wound healing ability because of glucose toxicity, making wound care critical. Helichrysum essential oil is prized for its ability to restore the skin and promote wound healing. A preclinical model of diabetic wounds found that adding 0.5% helichrysum oil to a gel or ointment significantly increased wound healing in comparison to controls and the gel or ointment without helichrysum.

Lavender essential oil is often called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils because it has so many uses. A recent laboratory study found that lavender reduces the secretion or mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, demonstrating it has anti-inflammatory activity. Knowing this, it would be a good option to add to your muscle and joint soothing blends.
