Forest bathing, originating in Japan as Shinrin-Yoku, is the restorative practice of mindfully relaxing in nature, breathing in the aromatic terpenoids of coniferous trees, along with the flowers, grasses and dirt while letting your senses take in the beauty around you to relieve stress from your body and mind.

A 2026 study published in Science Immunology found that after injury, men more frequently produced IL-10-producing immune cells linked to faster pain resolution. The important detail was that women did not necessarily have more inflammation. That does not reduce women’s pain to one pathway, but it does support the idea that persistent pain can have measurable biological differences, not simply anxiety or exaggeration.
