It is very important to our society, culture and industry not to let the tradition of the barbershop go to the wayside. We are countering this by providing the "Floyd's Barbershop" of Arab. I was sad to see R.C. Baldwin’s barbershop sitting empty while driving through Raven, Virginia. R. C. passed away a couple of years ago, but once upon a time he was quite the local fixture. He cut my dad’s hair so I was no stranger to him. He was known as “The Singing Barber” for, well, his singing talent. He was actually quite the Renaissance Man. He’d been a coal miner, electrician, carpenter, mechanic, etc. I can’t prove it, but I bet he could even cook a little, if need be. His barbershop was one of hundreds like it in these hills and hollers.

Before Facebook, before cell phones, before the internet, the barbershop was where you went to hear what was going on.

You’d walk in for a haircut and before you ever sat down you’d know who bought a new truck, who got married, and whose cow got loose. The barber knew everything and told most of all he knew.

And the old men sitting along the wall knew even more. The truth is, the haircut only took about 15 minutes. But most folks stayed an hour, sometimes it was because there was a line stacked up in front of them and sometimes it was because there was a realllllllyyyyy good story being told.

Because the real reason people went to the barbershop wasn’t just for the haircut. It was the stories too. Us men have to get our gossip too, gals.
