The United States banned benzene’s use as an ingredient nearly 45 years ago, yet an independent lab just tested 662 items and detected the highly carcinogenic and cancer-causing chemical in 180 deodorant products, or about 27% of them!

Some of the culprits are BRUT, Sure, Pantene , Herbal Essences, Old Spice, Secret, Tinactin, Lotrimin, Coppertone, Neutrogena and Aveeno.

"The benefits of clinical needling are well established, but I am repeatedly seeing posts that claim cosmetic rolling is neither safe or effective. In regards to safety, I’ve posted about the “rollers tear the skin” theory (they don’t) in the past, so check out that post. It’s funny, the professionals who denounce fear mongering (a good thing) are doing just that with rollers. Hypocrisy much? 🙄

What about efficacy? The claim is that the needle lengths on home rollers are not deep enough to produce benefits. Well, what does the EVIDENCE say?

The skin photo-aging model has been thoroughly elucidated over the past 40 years (Lavker, Kligman, et al), and we know that UV exposure leads to a cascade of metabolic events within the skin, ultimately producing the wrinkles we desperately try to get rid of. Histologically, it was shown that the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ) of sun exposed skin lost structural integrity (due to protein degrading enzymes), and this destabilization of the DEJ is a leading cause of wrinkle formation. The DEJ is what anchors the dermis to the epidermis. Keeping this structure healthy and intact is vital.

Cosmetic rolling utilizes needle depths around 0.2mm on average. Claiming this depth is ineffective completely ignores the molecular symphony that is paracrine signaling, which only requires needles piercing the viable keratinocytes just under the Stratum Corneum (barrier). In a gene assay study (Fan, Owen), researchers found that at 0.2mm there was a significant increase in the expression of DEJ related collagen proteins necessary for DEJ assembly and repair, down regulation of the degrading enzymes, as well as the reduction of most pro-inflammatory Interleukin Cytokines.

While the amount of Collagen 1 was not significantly increased (this is where clinical needling plays a role), cosmetic depths did increase Collagen 3, which is actually quite essential for Collagen 1 fibrillogenesis.

So, to say cosmetic rolling has no anti-aging benefit would be a gross misrepresentation of the truth. I encourage all professionals to execute more thorough research before making statements that don’t reflect scientific fact. 🤓"
