Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium from food, which is vital for bone development and strength. However, newborn babies may not get enough vitamin D because human breast milk contains very low levels of the nutrient, and newborns may not get it from direct sunlight.
For premature and low birth weight babies, the global consensus varies and recommendations on vitamin D supplementation differ from country to country.
A new Cochrane review including 34 studies (5,000+ babies) examined the evidence behind giving vitamin D supplements to help babies born early or with a low birth weight.
🔷 Vitamin D supplementation probably reduces the risk of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency.
🔷A higher dose works better than a lower dose, but it might be too much for some preterm babies.
🔷 Future studies should look at the optimal dose of vitamin D based on babies' weight and whether it has any effect on bone health.

ACOG recommends
"Partnering With Doulas in Clinical Settings"
In their statement, they recommend the followings:
- Obstetrician–gynecologists should educate themselves about doulas' spectrum of practice and the benefits of their work.
- Obstetrician–gynecologists should create synergistic, respectful teams that include doulas in ways that benefit patients and the workplace.
- Obstetrician–gynecologists should educate patients about the various roles of a doula and should be aware of local resources to assist patients in identifying doulas and related community resources.
- Obstetrician–gynecologists should be aware that there are various coverage and access options for doula support.
- Obstetrician–gynecologists should advocate for and support research on partnerships with doulas and the roles of doulas in obstetric and gynecologic care.

I was just having a conversation about “baby box” with expecting parents.
In Finland, new parents receive a free baby box, full of essential items to help their transition to the new role.
Why not here in the U.S.?
And Shades Of Blue Project is doing, just that! Instead of government. Each basket is not only a material gift. It is a message that someone cares about you. You are celebrated as a parent. And there are community behind you, to support.
Postpartum period can feel, and truly be, isolated. A basket can be a link to outside, society, network of people who are willing to listen to you, lend you a hand, or support you.
Congratulations on this remarkable achievement. And thank you for your tireless effort, to bring changes to maternal mental health.
Today, we pause to celebrate a real milestone.
After years of advocacy, persistence, and community-centered work, we helped secure the first-ever federal programmatic funding for the Newborn Essentials Support Toolkits (NEST). This is more than a win—it’s recognition that maternal mental health, financial stress, and basic needs are deeply connected.
While we are proud of this progress, we remain grounded in the reason this work exists: families deserve support during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
We celebrate this step forward, honor the journey it took to get here, and recommit ourselves to continuing the fight for what our community needs, wants, and deserves.
This is progress. And we’re just getting started.

We are excited to share our interactive map depicting current state efforts at expanding Medicaid coverage of doula care. We hope this map is a more visually appealing and user-friendly way for doulas, advocates, researchers, legislators, and other stakeholders to track and compare state efforts across the country. This map tracks in real time the information on our state efforts chart, which we have been maintaining consistently since 2021. Note that our state efforts chart will also continue to be updated for those who prefer to view the information in that format. https://healthlaw.org/doulamedicaidproject/map/

🤰 A new Cochrane review covering more than 100 randomized clinical trials and over 30,000 women has highlighted the safety and effectiveness of 13 commonly used methods for inducing labour.
The findings show that while most induction methods are similarly effective, their safety differs depending on the clinical context, particularly for women without a previous caesarean section.
Highlights from the review:
🔍 No method clearly outperformed low‑dose vaginal misoprostol on major outcomes such as achieving vaginal birth within 24 hours.
🔍 Oxytocin with amniotomy was the most successful at achieving birth within 24 hours.
🔍 Mechanical methods (e.g., balloon catheters) were among the safest, reducing risks like uterine hyperstimulation.
🔍Evidence for women with previous C‑sections remains limited, highlighting an urgent research gap.
🔍 No methods were deemed unsafe enough to discontinue.
Researchers emphasize that while effectiveness matters, safety and context should guide clinical decisions, especially in low‑resource settings where availability and cost are key factors.
