You saw a spider in the bathroom and your first thought was "is that a brown recluse." It almost certainly isn't. There are three thousand spider species in North America. Exactly two are medically significant. The other 2,998 are catching the insects you don't want in the house.
The two to know: black widow — shiny black with a red hourglass, found in dark undisturbed spaces like woodpiles and sheds. Brown recluse — limited to the south-central US, violin-shaped mark, avoids contact, bites mostly when pressed against skin in stored clothing. Both are rare encounters. Fatalities are extremely rare with treatment.
🌿 The five you actually see every day are all harmless. The jumping spider watching you from the wall hunts by stalking — she can't hurt you. The wolf spider running across the floor looks terrifying and carries her babies on her back — also harmless. The cellar spider in the corner kills other spiders, including black widows. The garden orb weaver catches hundreds of insects per web per night and eats the web to rebuild it by morning.
Two out of three thousand. The spider in your bathroom is not one of them 🐾

Some plants have earned their place in history because they were powerful, feared, respected, and used very carefully. Many of them were tied to old medicine, folklore, ritual work, and eventually even modern pharmaceuticals.
🌿 Belladonna
Also known as deadly nightshade, belladonna contains alkaloids like atropine and scopolamine. Atropine is still used in modern medicine, especially in controlled medical settings, including eye care and emergency medicine. The plant itself, though, is highly poisonous and unpredictable.
🌿 Foxglove
Foxglove is one of the clearest examples of a dangerous plant shaping modern medicine. Compounds from foxglove led to digitalis and digoxin, which have been used in heart medicine. This does not mean anyone should use foxglove at home. The dose window is narrow, and the plant can be deadly.
🌿 Henbane
Henbane was used historically for pain, sleep, ritual work, and even in some old brewing traditions before hops became more standard. It contains strong tropane alkaloids that can cause confusion, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and poisoning. This is very much a history lesson, not a DIY project.
🌿 Mandrake
Mandrake has a heavy reputation in old medicine and folklore. It was associated with sleep, pain relief, fertility, love magic, and protective charms. Medicinally, it was once valued for its sedative and narcotic effects, but it is also highly toxic and not something to casually mess with.
🌿 Datura
Datura has been used in some traditional medicine systems and ritual practices, but it is also one of the most dangerous plants people underestimate. It can cause intense delirium, hallucinations, overheating, rapid heart rate, and life-threatening poisoning. This plant is not “a little wild.” It is seriously risky.
🍄 Amanita muscaria
This red-capped mushroom has a long history in folklore, ritual use, and some Siberian shamanic traditions. It is not the same as culinary mushrooms and should not be treated like one. Its effects can be unpredictable, and improper use can lead to poisoning and severe reactions.
Plants like these remind us that “natural” does not automatically mean gentle. Some of the most fascinating plants in history were respected because they were powerful, not because they were harmless.

Complications of Mouth Breathing
Mouth Breathing You have two air passageways to your lungs, through the nose and the mouth. Healthy people use both their nose and their mouth to breathe. Breathing through the mouth ONLY becomes necessary when you have nasal congestion due to allergies or a cold and when you are exercising strenuously it can help get oxygen to your muscles faster. Breathing through your mouth all the time or even just when sleeping can lead to health problems....
