Asbury Fresh summer season flew by! It was a tough goodbye since the nor’eastern canceled our last market, but I’m SO grateful I got to spend this season with the incredible market managers and vendors.

If youre already missing your local favorites (🙋‍♀️) this PSA is for you. Last week was climateweeknyc, a week-long platform for climate leaders, communities, and events. We didn’t make it to any events this year, but we followed along and heard the vibes were high. Conversations covered food waste, wind and solar investment, ocean health, and AI. (Anyone else see the student protestors calling out AI companies over their environmental impact? 🙋‍♀️)

The NAT GALA also returned for its second year, raising funds for nature initiatives with partners like Conservation International, Blue Marine Foundation, and Open Planet.

Watching it all got us thinking about what it means for our refill shop. Refill models are one of the real solutions that already exist, and we’re keeping at it: fighting food waste, supporting ocean health, and cutting plastic at the source. Bring a jar this week and be part of it. 💚

A few announcements for this week:

- Monday we’ll be closing at 3pm so we can attend the 5th Annual Team O’Brien Golf Outing in support of rare cancer research which is drastically underfunded. My cousin Brennan battled adrenocortic cancer in 2015 and lost his life 8 months after his diagnosis at 30 years old. This event directly supports those on the front lines fighting rare cancers to promote better patient outcomes.

- Wednesday we’ll be closed so we can attend the NJIT Green annual sustainability fair. Come shop, chat about internship opportunities for students, and win prizes. We are so honored to be involved!

I put together this basket to be a part of the annual fundraiser as a raffle prize. All donations directly benefit the Adrenal Neoplasia program within the Rogel Cancer Center steered by Dr. Gary Hammer, who my cousin believed deeply in. The goal is to advance rare cancer research and improve patient outcomes. More info can be found here: teamobrien.org

We will also be closed Wednesday so we can attend the annual Sustainabiliy Fair at NJIT. We were invited to attend by their Office of Sustainability after we crossed paths at CRAN Jam hosted by CRAN.

We love any event where we can chat about sustainability and we’re excited to meet the next generation of people thinking hard about it too. If you’re an NJIT student, come find us at our table. We’d love to chat!

There’s something very *pleasing* about filling a few pantry staples here in the shop rather than at the chain grocery store. When I shop here, I know I’m avoiding toxic chemicals, excess packaging, and overconsumption.
