In 1847, Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis investigated why so many mothers were dying from childbed fever at Vienna General Hospital. After a colleague died from an infection following an autopsy injury, Semmelweis concluded that doctors were carrying infectious material from corpses to maternity patients on their hands. 🩺 He ordered medical staff to wash with a chlorinated lime solution before examinations, reducing maternal mortality from about 12 percent to roughly 1 percent. Despite the dramatic results, many doctors rejected his findings because germ theory was not yet widely accepted. His work later became a foundation of modern infection control and earned him the name “saviour of mothers.” 🧼
