Farewell for Now, Hair Doing

Dear friends,

After a great deal of reflection—and a healthy dose of surrender—I've made the difficult decision to cancel all standing appointments and close my books indefinitely, effective immediately.

This wasn't the plan.

I had hoped to continue seeing clients through August while we finished building Q-Hall. But opening Asheville's first q***r women's sports bar has reached a point where it deserves every ounce of my attention, energy, creativity, and care. If we're going to open our doors in early September, I can no longer divide myself between two callings.

So, for now, I'm letting go of the salon.

For nearly fifteen years, it has been one of the greatest honors of my life to be your hairstylist.

You trusted me with your hair through weddings, divorces, coming out, gender transitions, new careers, parenthood, grief, healing, celebrations, and all the ordinary Tuesdays in between. Together we laughed, cried, solved the world's problems, and occasionally our own.

Somewhere along the way, this stopped being just about hair.

It became community.

Many of you followed me from salon to salon, supported me when I opened my own business, celebrated my marriage and daughter being born, stood beside me through COVID, through my recent divorce, and now through the audacious dream of building a permanent home for q***r community and women's sports in Western North Carolina.

You didn't just book appointments.

You believed in me.

To everyone whose upcoming appointment I now have to cancel, I am truly sorry. I know this comes with very little notice, and I don't take that lightly. This decision wasn't made because I stopped loving this work or you. Quite the opposite.

I love you and the sublime transformative exchange that happens with every single service I provide enough to know I cannot continue doing it halfway.

Yesterday, I gave what I now know was my final haircut of this chapter.

My last client was the Rev. Dr. Lea Brown, D.Min., BCC—a board-certified chaplain serving veterans, a longtime q***r faith leader, and a cherished client who's been in my chair for years.

It felt right that my final cut would be a classic butch cut.

When we finished, I asked Lea for her blessing.

A blessing to help me maintain my integrity as I leave one vocation to answer the calling of another. A blessing to protect my attention and strength as we race toward opening day. A blessing asking forgiveness from those I couldn't see one last time. And yes… under a Full Moon… a blessing to shield Q-Hall from trickster energy and call in our q***r ancestors to watch over this place we're building together.

It was exactly the ending I didn't know I needed.

After Q-Hall is open and operating, I may eventually find time to care for a small handful of longtime clients. I simply don't know when that will be, and I don't want to make promises I can't keep. Until then, my books are closed indefinitely.

In the meantime, I'd love to help you find your next stylist.

For salon services, color, longer appointments, and blowouts, I wholeheartedly recommend Tonya or Adrienne at Union Hill Salon.

For short barber-style cuts in a welcoming space for q***r folks and LGBTQ+ allies, I highly recommend Cloud at The Local Barber & Tap West. Cloud is an exceptional stylist and trained barber, and I trust them completely with anyone looking for clean, short cuts and classic barbering at the same price point I provided.

There isn't anyone who cuts hair exactly the way I do—and that's okay. My hope is simply that you find someone who makes you feel seen, respected, and completely yourself.

Thank you for every conversation, every laugh, every tear, every referral, every holiday card, every hug, every tip, every ounce of encouragement, and every haircut that somehow became so much more than a haircut.

You helped build me.

And in more ways than you probably realize...

You helped build Q-Hall.

The conversations aren't ending.

They're just moving from behind the chair to the D**e Deck.

Meet me at Q-Hall, where I hope you'll come watch a game, celebrate a win, make a friend, and help us write the next chapter together.

With love and endless gratitude,

JJ Pope

This Fourth of July, we’re celebrating a different kind of independence.

Today’s fresh cut went to an OWL—an older, wiser lesbian—who’s been through hell and is still sitting tall (and smirking). After a serious car accident and weeks of healing, she wanted to feel like herself again. So I brought the scissors, the shade, and the solidarity.

Because freedom isn’t fireworks—it’s q***r dignity, body autonomy, and the right to feel good in your skin at every age, ability, and stage of recovery.

Haircuts can be resistance. Care is a form of pride.

Don’t mind if I hair do share…
One of my long-standing fave clients, now rocking new dad life and grade school teacher vibes here in Asheville. Doesn’t hurt to look this good when school’s out for summer. ☀️✂️

Styled with Aquage Sea Salt Spray + Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Cream for touchable texture and stay-all-day volume.

Soft Butch. Styled Bold.
This short cut has movement, edge, and just enough volume to say yes I’m outdoorsy, but I moisturize.

Styled with Aquage Sea Salt Spray + Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Styling Cream for texture that holds without the crunch.

Perfect for any gender—but I especially love it on a tall drink of Appalachian water.

✂️ 30-minute haircut = $35 💰😃
🌈 All identities welcome

Goodbye middle part, hello heartthrob.
This proper butch glow-up brought the drama and the definition: high volume, tight fade, zero nonsense.

Classic clipper work meets q***r precision — undercut sides, hand-scissored top for texture and height, and a finish that reads strong, stylish, and totally self-assured.

You know it’s right when the mirror says, “Damn, there you are.”
Because every haircut is a little reclamation.
