Updates for Mia’s (slick’s) surgery and recovery

07/22/2023

Long time, no update, however if anyone is wondering how slick is doing this summer, this about sums it up 🤣 She has been to kings island and rode all the coasters, the beach twice, and jumped for three straight hours at the Taylor Swift concert, and as you can see, she’s still pushing every single limit, like she never even had surgery 🤣❤️ strongest kid I know

First day back was a success!! She sure did miss all her friends and teachers, so seeing them made her day! Only some minimal shoulder pain so far, we are interested to see how she feels when she wakes up tomorrow. She’s practicing her violin for the first time since before surgery, and she has six whole days to learn the piece before the concert 🙃 however if anyone can, it’s her ❤️

We started at 36,59 and 57!!!!!!! This is where she’s at today!!

Guess who gets to go back to school mondayyyyy!!!!!!! New X-rays looked amazing and her amazing doctor was very pleased with her progress! Incision is completely closed, and we go back in six weeks for another check, at which point he believes he can release her for ROLLERCOASTERS 😳 got the okay to play her violin, she can bend and twist now which she’s super happy about and is allowed to lift more than five pounds!!! We couldn’t possibly be more proud of her, being by her side thru this, we’ve seen amazing strength and willpower from her! This one is tough, and super rotten 🙃

Hey friends! Long time, no update, we’ve been busy healing and she’s living her best life! Here are her newest measurements! Keep in mind that before surgery, her curves were 36, 59, and 57!!! This is an incredible improvement, more than we honestly dreamed, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with our surgeon. From day one he and his nurse, have went above and beyond to take care of Mia! Her favorite nurse even popped in to see her after surgery, while on maternity leave 😂❤️ the bottom curve was untouched during surgery, so the fact that there’s that big of a change already is awesome! It will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months and then we will reassess and come up with a plan. Our hope is that it will straighten enough to avoid another surgery, but she is a warrior and is ready for whatever. She’s rolling around the house like she didn’t even have surgery, her back is still completely numb, and when she has pain it is presenting in her shoulders. Her mesh came completely off yesterday and she got her first normal shower, water could hit her back, and she didn’t need the shower chair, so she’s feeling pretty good about life right now. She saw Devin (from physical therapy) today at Walmart and that made her smile so big. This kid is incredible and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome of her surgery ❤️

Two weeks ago we loaded her in and brought her home. Today, she walked in like a boss 💪🏼 she did real good on the trip down, lots of pillows and Taylor Swift 😂 I added a before picture for reference and updated X-rays from today. The hardware is still in place exactly where it needs to be and there’s no rejection 👏🏼 she’s very tilted but he said that’s normal because of the bottom curve and he said it may take up to a year for us to see what it’s going to do exactly, but the hope is that it straightens out well and she won’t require another surgery after high school! Fingers are crossed! Bandages can stay off because her incision is healing beautifully and she is so happy about that. Changing it was awful. A good day full of good news! ❤️

Mia asked for me to update, so here goes! She has been doing AMAZING!!! The kid is rolling around the house like she didn’t just have a major surgery 😂 she hasn’t had anything for pain, not even Tylenol or Motrin, for two days, which is CRAZY to me. I could never. She’s went on a few trips out of the house, but not too far. She got to celebrate baby carls birthday with him, she went and painted pottery, and just yesterday she got a brand new baby cousin ❤️ she’s watching lots of PLL, eating yummy food, and hanging out with her pitty, Lucy! We go Thursday for a post op checkup with her incredible surgeon, and we will get height measurements that day too and I know she’s pumped for that. Hopefully that long trip isn’t too rough on her ❤️

Shower, bandage change (which always hurts so much and makes her vomit) and then I got her out of the house for the first time since getting home ❤️ First stop was OF COURSE to see the best two physical therapists in the tristate. Mia was so so happy to see them and they seemed real happy too! We wish we would have gotten a picture but by the time we realized, we were pulling out and she didn’t have it in her to walk back in. She needed a rest so we went down to the car wash and stopped at Taco Bell for a blue slushy before heading to the dollar tree. She walked quite a few of the aisles and then was more than ready to get back home to the recliner. She’s comfy and resting now, and even though it was tough and mom was real nervous, first outing went really well! This girl is one of the strongest people I know ❤️💪🏼

Hey friends ❤️ it’s been a day or two since I updated. We’ve been settling in at home, trying to figure out where she’s most comfortable and trying to care for her in the best ways we can. With Mia’s permission, I’m sharing her incision. Today is day 5!!! She got to shower today and was so very excited to just have clean hair 🙃 it wasn’t a very glamorous experience though, because it ended with so much pain, and vomiting, so maybe next shower will be more spa like. Bandages got changed today and that made me cry, it’s hard to see something like that on your kid, But overall, she’s doing so so well and we are all so proud of her. She decided yesterday morning to go on a solo adventure and get up out of the recliner alone, walk to the bathroom, change clothes, you know, all the things she isn’t supposed to do alone 🙃 she got stuck in a rolling computer chair and then decided to call us to help because we were asleep. This independent child scared me so bad 😂 she’s cracking jokes at every opportunity, watching a lot of tv, getting spoiled by everyone sending yummy snacks, she feels the love and so do we ❤️

This brought her so much joy today and made her giggle! Her physical therapy team sent these, the two people who I swear are behind the strength this kid has had post-op! They’ve put so much time, effort and care into this kid, and she’s been asking to see them since she was in the pacu 😂❤️ I refuse to believe there’s a better place for therapy in the tristate. Premiere in Russell is hands down the BEST and Tim and Sam have made such an impact in Mia’s life ❤️
