Throw back Pearl twist photo! I loved my hair back when people were not embracing kinks. I lost internships and jobs because I would not “tame” my hair. At the time very few wmn wore kinky hair and we were ridiculed for it. Had to constantly matrix away from people trying to touch our hair. Told we would be so much prettier if our hair were str8. And put in a position to have to defend our decision without offending everyone else’s insecurities. This was a time when two natural hair women spotted each other out of the crowd and were immediate sisters. From this…the natural hair movement was born and i deeply believe the beard movement was born from the victories of the crown policies. Many of you have no idea what went into the struggle of natural hair. I see so many kids in grade school with natural hair and I love it. To them this is just a way of life.
