Long before she became the billionaire philanthropist known for her record-breaking support of HBCUs, Scott was a creative writing student at Toni Morrison’s table at Princeton University in the early ’90s. Morrison once called her “one of the best students I’ve ever had in my creative writing classes.”

Scott told us it was more than mentorship — it was life-changing: “This is what she meant by writing, by story, by legacy.” Morrison later recommended Scott for a job at a hedge-fund, a move that unknowingly led to her meeting Jeff Bezos, who also worked there.
