I asked google, what era in black hair care has created the most hair loss and traction alopecia?
Google said:
"The era that has created the most significant increase in hair loss and traction alopecia among Black women is generally considered to be from the late 1990s through the 2000s to the present, driven by the high popularity of long-term, tight extension styles, weaves, and the combination of these styles with chemically relaxed hair.
While tight braiding and chemical relaxers have caused damage throughout the 20th century, the surge in using heavy weaves, sew-ins, glue-on wigs, and tight, long-term extensions has dramatically increased rates of traction alopecia, making it the most common form of hair loss among Black women today.
Key factors contributing to the rise in hair loss during this period include:
The Weave and Extension Era (2000s–Present): Increased use of weaves, extensions, and tight ponytails or buns often results in chronic tension on the hair follicles, particularly at the front hairline and temples.
Combination of Chemical and Tension: A major driver of hair loss is the combination of tight styling (braids/weaves) on hair that has been weakened by chemical relaxers.
Glue Usage: The use of glues for extensions and wigs, when applied directly to the scalp, causes significant breakage upon removal.
Longevity of Styles: The prolonged, uninterrupted wear of these styles leaves little time for the hair follicles to recover. "

THE TALK — A Beauty Industry Reset
Premieres Monday • Dec 8 • 6:30 PM EST
Instagram + Facebook (60-min Premiere)
For nearly 30 years, I’ve watched the beauty industry shift.
But with every shift, one thing has become painfully clear:
Our industry has lost something.
Structure.
Professionalism.
Continuity.
Respect for licensed expertise.
And beauty professionals everywhere are feeling it.
For years, systems have been the quiet engine behind my success, not trends, not luck, not going viral.
What kept my career thriving wasn’t chance — it was structure.
The way I prepared before a client arrived.
The way I studied their history, not just their hair.
The way I built trust through consistency, clarity, and care.
Those foundations carried me through every shift this industry has seen.
We will discuss the HOW and the lost element most beauty professionals have forgotten and how to get it back.
It’s time to talk about it.
Inside THE TALK, we’re covering:
• Why our industry lost its structure — and how we get it back
• How to protect your craft in a world of shortcuts + misinformation
• Why clients can feel when a stylist is truly professional
• The real reason some pros stay booked for decades
• The pressure of 2026: tech, AI, and the future of beauty
• The missing piece our industry has never had — until now
• The systems that create loyalty, longevity, and consistency
If you’re a licensed beauty professional — you need to be here.
If you’re a client — this will change the way you choose and the way you see us.
