In the last year, I have struggled with my eating, my weight, my body image. I keep on going back and forward between between dieting and intuitive eating. I have counted calories, gone on WW and eaten 'intuitively' a lot of chocolate and candy in between. Plus I have been stuck at home, eating emotionally and not moving a great deal. As a result, my pants don’t fit for the first time in 6 years.
Six years ago I lost a significant amount of weight with kickboxing, a healthy lifestyle, intuitive eating. Well, that was my story for years, except I now realize that there was a good bit of over exercising and restrictive eating that was necessary to lose that weight.
Fortunately, not all my healthy habits disappeared last year. Even though there was no attending the gym, I still worked out regularly. Unfortunately, I started eating plenty of high calories with low nutrition foods. These foods became the greatest and often the only source of pleasure and joy in days of sadness and fear.
Now, I have reached a point where I want to lose weight and fit back into my pants - comfortably. I realize what works for me is my own version of intuitive eating. If I go on a diet, and cut foods or food groups out of my eating, I will feel deprived and ultimately rebel and binge. Yet, if I can eat everything but change the proportions and portion sizes then I can reduce calories and increase fiber. This will help me lose weight. I hope…
I had felt so pulled to embrace all the principles of Intuitive Eating as it feels so right, so compassionate and accepting and permissive. Yet, every time I completely embrace Intuitive Eating, I gain weight. Especially, during quarantine and times of stress. The more weight I gain the more depressed I felt. Even though I continued to exercise and eat nutritious salads, I also ate full meals followed by lots of chocolates, popcorn, alcohol, and TV. Of course, I gained weight.
There are some amazing heroes in the world of Intuitve Eating, Body Positivity and Body Resilience. They discuss the damage caused by a society that is so thin centric. Followed by how women allow themselves to be objectified. Damn, I am a feminist! Women are not objects or ornaments - our bodies are powerful and useful. Therefore, the answer seemed to be that I should accept my growing body and not be concerned about what I look like, but rather what I feel like. Unfortunately, I realized that gaining weight would not only necessitate a new wardrobe but I would probably feel sluggish and unattractive. Even though I completely agree with the tenets of HAES and Body Positivity, I feel best when I am in a healthy weight. I do not need to be thin but I do not want to be overweight. Don’t I have a choice to decide what is most important to me? My values seem to reflect a value of health as well as beauty. I may not agree with the current dictates of thinness and I love seeing more body diversity in our media, but I do not want to be overweight. I also do not want to live in a state of diet cycling. Therefore, the answer seems to be a customized version of intuitive eating. My own unique lifestyle that honors my appetite, my cravings, and my weight desires.
Strategies for success with the lifestyle upgrade:
Eat ALOT of vegetables.
Eat lots of fruit.
Drink lots of water.
Limit portion size and amounts.
Exercise ALOT!
Choose nutrient-rich and calorie low foods.
Allow for treats.
How are you dealing with weight gain?
