A little overlap between two of my favorite things - color theory and Mahjong!
Mahjong is an incredibly fun game, but the aesthetics of the tile sets, mats, racks, and accessories are UNBELIEVABLY GOOD! If selecting your Mahj set feels a little overwhelming, here are some ways to use color theory to help narrow things down.
π Which look or feeling do you love best? Bright, bold, and playful? Sophisticated, calming, and rich? Light and airy? Jewel toned and deep?
π Once you have a look or style in mind, you can start with your tiles as they are the centerpiece of your set and typically the bigger investment. Going with budget tiles or have a mat you've fallen in love with? Starting there is fine too, but have one piece in mind that you love and build around it.
π€ Calming, sophisticated palettes are typically analogous, neutral, light, or soft / muted colors.
β Fun, vibrant palettes are brighter and use a mix of complementary colors.
π¨ The 60/30/10 Rule is common in interior design, but is often applied in other areas of design and fashion. Having a dominant color that composes 60% of the design with a secondary color (30%) and an accent color (10%) creates a balanced, visually pleasing result.
β
The secondary and accent colors in a mat can be great colors for your tiles and racks.
π Try to keep cohesiveness in mind when considering colors. If your tiles and mat are soft and muted, a bright rack will likely look out of place and jarring.
βοΈ A bit of contrast will keep your tablescape visually interesting in a good way! For example, if your mat and racks are light pastel colors, tiles that are medium in depth will be easier to see and create visual interest.
