Spray tanning is the smart, fast way to get a deep, dark tan without spending time in a tanning bed or sitting in the sun. The key to getting stellar results from any spray tanning system is to prepare your skin and give the spray ample time to develop. Also, whether you're performing the task at home or going to a salon, give yourself enough time to undergo the procedure, as it isn't a process you want to rush. Going too quickly can result in streaking and patchy spots of color. Features
All spray tanning features Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient that darkens the skin's pigment. DHA is derived from sugar cane and works with dead skin cells that sit on the surface to "stain" skin, leaving behind a dark color. DHA is FDA approved and does not contribute to premature aging or skin cancer like UVA/UVB rays, which come from the natural sun and tanning beds. Considerations
Always take your own skin tone into account when spray tanning. A person with very fair skin is not going to get the same results from spray tanning as someone who has dark skin to begin with. If spray tanning at home, be sure to select a spray tan meant for light to medium skin, or medium to dark skin, depending on your own skin tone. Allow color to fully develop before going over skin with another layer of spray tan, so you don't end up too dark and have to start the process over. When the spray tan eventually fades, scrub it off with an exfoliator or loofah so you have a smooth, even surface should you wish to apply it again. Preparation
The key to getting an even, golden tan is to prepare your skin before undergoing a spray tan. Use an exfoliating body gel or cream or scrub to slough off dead skin, leaving behind a clean surface for the spray tan to work with. Shaving should also be done at this point, as it's advised not to shave for 24 hours after the spray tan is applied. Pay close attention to areas of skin that are prone to dryness such as the elbows, knees and ankles. Spray tanning at a salon can be worth the money because a professional is applying the self-tanning solution or you're stepping into a professional machine that will spray the tanner on in an even manner. This can cost anywhere from $25 for a single session in a spray tanning booth to $80 for a professional technician to air brush your body with self-tanner, creating the illusion of a leaner physique. Preparation should be done beforehand just as you would at home.
