3 Muscle groups, smooth, cardiac, skeletal
- Skeletal muscle – These muscles are attached from bones to tendons and allow your horse to move. This musculoskeletal system (also known as the locomotor system) is under our conscious control, which is why they are also known as voluntary muscles. They are also generally used grouped into opposing pairs such as the biceps and triceps on the front and back of the upper arm.
- Smooth muscle – These are involuntary muscles that are located in various internal structures. They include the digestive tract, uterus and blood vessels such as arteries.
- Cardiac muscle – It is a muscle specifically used for the heart. Its use is specifically to contract and relax the heart without our conscious being aware.
When it comes to your horse's muscles everything connects. One movement of a muscle results in a chain reaction of several others. It is impossible to move only one muscle and not the rest. Same will go for treating muscles, you can’t simply just do one.

Horses cant throw-up or burp
Horses can't vomit or burp due to the valve between the stomach and esophagus that only allows a one-way flow. The valve is called cardias or " Swiss tie ", the muscles of this valve are so strong that they prevent food from returning to the mouth. This is the main reason why when horses colic it is deadly.

~Fun Fact Friday~Horses frogs are shock absorbent
The frog is instantly seen when picking up the horses hoof. Its the tough, thick, V-shaped structure pointing down from the heels to the toe. The frog helps with circulation shock absorption, traction and it protects the digital cushion that is beneath it. It is a very vital and crucial part of the hoof for proper function.

Geldings have more teeth then mares!
Mature male horses will have between 40-42 permanent teeth while mares typically have 36-40.
Canine teeth are normally only present in geldings/stallions and they appear only 20-25% of the time in mares.
Canine teeth erupt in the inter dental space at 4-5 years of age in male horses.

Horses can see with both eyes separately
Horses have Monocular and Binocular vision. Monocular vision is when both eyes can see different images at the same time. Animals such as birds and rabbits can do the same.
Binocular vision is when both eyes are used to see the same image. Humans have binocular vision.
Horses are able to have both because they are a prey animal and need to see everywhere all at once! They need to keep a close eye on their surroundings at all times.
However horses are not able to have both visions simultaneously. It does take them a couple seconds to adjust changing their vision from one to the other. This is also why we say to make sure you desensitize a horse from both sides with the same object because they do not look at it the same.
Now remember, horses have eyes everywhere so no funny business! 🤪

~Fun Fact Friday~Old Billy was the oldest horse to ever live on record. He lived till the old age of 62!
1760-1822 Old Billy lived a very long life in Woolston, Lancashire UK.
Old Billy worked as a barge horse, dragging barges in the canals from the shore for Mersey and Irwell Navigation.
He was trotting till the end!
