HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH

This I will continue to celebrate the skin I’m in. It is truly an honor & privilege to be a BLACK woman. Despite all of the challenges we face, we stand strong and continuously exceed expectations. There are MANY black women in my life who have always been examples of strength, tenacity, grace, intelligence, & so much more.

Even though we celebrate blackness EVERYDAY, this month let’s commit to emphasizing our pride and power - in ourselves & our communities. How are y’all celebrating this year?! Let me know, its UP alll month long!

SIX whole months as Dr. Davis and it has been a ride! Jumping straight out into practicing filled me with so much anxiety, but I had to TRUST that Meharry equipped me with what I needed. Was I scared - Absolutely, but I'm so glad I followed my gut & walked confidently into my profession! ⁠

Serving in Public Health has allowed me to:⁠
✨ experience a diverse patient population ⁠
✨provide dental care to those with limited access⁠
✨& even serve as the FIRST dentist my patient's have ever seen. ⁠

I truly excited about my future in dentistry & grateful for my opportunity to start in Public Health Dentistry. ⁠

✨My Story, His Glory ✨

When I didn’t MATCH last year, I was crushed. I felt like all of the hard work I put in, in my four years of dental school, meant nothing! Sounds dramatic - but that’s genuinely how I felt. Initially, my first thought was “I’ll just reapply next year” but then the gravity of the decision hit me harder and harder throughout the day, as I watched others celebrate their respective matches! As happy as I was for my classmates, who absolutely deserved to MATCH at these amazing programs - I felt ashamed, embarrassed, less than, hurt, all of the above! Without hesitation my family, my fiancé (now husband 🥰), my mentor & my closest friends would NOT let me stay down! They stayed on the phone with me all day, listened to me cry, sent me flowers, took me to lunch and reminded me of who I was!

This decision didn’t define me and it wasn’t a NO, it was a NOT YET.

Today, I’m blessed to say that I MATCHED. I will be a Periodontist 😭 and it’s even more special because I get to celebrate it with two of the greatest blessings God has given me, my husband and my MJ 💙

What I didn’t know a year ago, was that God was AHEAD of me - He knew where I would be, where He wanted me to be, and where I needed to be. What I wanted didn’t matter and I’m so glad about that. The pain I felt a year ago was worth the joy I feel telling MJ, “Mommy MATCHED” 🥺

So to my fellow dental students who may not have MATCHED today - there’s hope. This algorithm doesn’t define who you are. Professional students tend to tie our value to our academic achievements and that’s simply incorrect. You’re just as valuable of a applicant whether you MATCH or not! If you need someone to vent to my DM’s are open! I’m so excited about my future and so grateful for God having His hands on my life.
