For so long, curly girls — and even stylists who simply weren’t trained in textured hair — believed that layers would make curly hair bigger, rounder, and harder to control. In reality, the opposite is often true. One of the biggest misconceptions about curly hair is that keeping it all one length will “calm it down,” when that actually creates heavy weight buildup at the bottom, leading to the dreaded triangle shape. Thoughtfully placed layers remove excess bulk, redistribute the weight, and allow curls to fall more naturally, creating a softer, more elongated oval silhouette instead of width at the sides. The right layering technique can make thick curly hair feel lighter, move better, and become far easier to style and manage.
