In Crooklyn, Troy is a 9 year-old pre-teen, growing up in Brooklyn, NY. She watches her mother carry the responsibility of keeping their family together—and eventually, Troy begins carrying it too.

It seemed both Troy and her mother were expected to nurture, sacrifice, and show up for everyone else.

It’s a responsibility often passed down to Black girls before they’re old enough to understand the weight of it.
