I started wearing makeup in high school and I never went a day without it. Covering up my acne, every single day. And I never thought for a second that it was the crap I was putting on my face, let alone that those ingredients were aging me.

Here’s what I know now.

Up to 80% of how your face ages has nothing to do with genetics. It’s UV. And UVA is the one that matters, it goes deep, past the surface, into the layer where your collagen and elastin live, and it breaks them down. Every day. In winter. Through your car window.

So every day I put on a foundation that did nothing to protect me, I was aging my skin while trying to look good in it.

Mineral formulas work differently. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on your skin and physically reflect and scatter UV instead of letting it through and zinc covers the deep UVA range most filters miss. Even the iron oxides that give mineral makeup its colour do something: research shows they help block visible light, which is a driver of pigmentation and melasma.
