My client loves a bold money piece, but one of her biggest concerns was that traditional root shadows would completely mute the brightness she comes in for. Because her natural base is so dark, leaving a root shadow on too long can not only make the front feel “covered up,” but also cast unwanted warmth into the money piece — something she’s extremely sensitive to.

Instead of creating a heavy shadow at the root, I focused on building soft diffusion throughout her baseline using a teased application technique. This allowed us to create a seamless transitional tone that still felt bright, intentional, and dimensional without sacrificing contrast around the face.

That’s why I always blow-dry the first section in the front. It allows you to see and feel the tone early on. Now, drying just that front piece won’t fully show you the overall brightness or the consistency of the technique — it’s simply a preview of the tone. From there, we can refine in real time: go darker, neutralize, or enhance.
