You shouldn’t have to choose between skincare that feels safe and skincare that actually performs. 🧡

For me, thoughtful formulation isn’t about following whichever ingredient is currently being celebrated - or cancelled - online.

It’s about making decisions based on evidence.

I’m incredibly selective about the ingredients and suppliers I work with. I formulate with French labs, manufacture in the United States and follow European clean beauty standards - but I refuse to formulate from a place of fear.

I won’t remove an ingredient simply because its name sounds intimidating.

And I won’t add something just because it looks beautiful on the front of a bottle.

Every ingredient should have a reason for being there.

The question I keep coming back to is simple:

What does the data actually say?

Because good skincare shouldn’t be built around fear. It should be built around safety, efficacy and intelligent formulation.

That’s the standard behind Beauty by Code.

“Clean” doesn’t automatically mean better. And a longer ‘free-from’ list doesn’t automatically make a formula safer.

When I look at skincare, I’m far less interested in what’s been removed from the bottle - and far more interested in what’s actually inside it, why it’s there and whether the formulation makes sense.

There are three questions I believe matter:

Is it supported by safety data at the concentration being used?
Is there good evidence that the ingredient can actually do what we’re asking it to do?
And has the formula been created so those ingredients remain stable and can function as intended?

Because skincare formulation is more nuanced than labelling certain ingredients as “good” and others as “bad.”

A beautiful label is marketing.

A well-considered formula is science.

That distinction matters to me - both as a founder and as the person creating the products you put on your skin.

A damaged skin barrier isn’t a reason to panic. It’s your skin telling you something needs to change.

And very often, that change is doing less - not buying more.

When you strip away the unnecessary steps, focus on supporting your barrier and become more intentional about what you’re putting on your skin, you might be surprised by how simple your routine can become.

Three or four products used consistently can make far more sense than a shelf full of actives your skin doesn’t need.

And once your barrier feels settled? That’s when we can start thinking about targeted ingredients again - including which acid actually makes sense for your skin.

Because less isn’t giving up on your skin.

Less can be the strategy.

Your skincare routine shouldn’t be frozen in time. 🧡

One of the biggest mistakes I see women make is finding a routine that worked for them years ago… and assuming it should still be doing the same job today.

It’s why I’m far more interested in what your skin needs now than what’s trending, what your friend uses or what has the biggest price tag.

Sometimes the answer is surprisingly simple. One considered addition. One ingredient your routine has been missing. One small change that makes everything else work harder.

You don’t need a bathroom cabinet overflowing with products.

You need a routine that has evolved with you.

If your skin barrier feels compromised, your first instinct might be to add another product. I’d do the opposite.

Sometimes skin doesn’t need more. It needs a chance to reset.

Start by stripping your routine right back for a couple of weeks: a gentle cleanser, a barrier-supporting moisturiser and daily SPF. Give your skin a break from layering multiple acids, retinoids and actives while it settles.

Then look at what you’re actually giving your barrier. Ingredients such as ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol are important components of the skin barrier, so these are worth looking for when choosing your products.

And when your skin is ready? Don’t bring everything back at once. Reintroduce your actives gradually, one at a time, so you can actually understand what your skin responds well to.

The goal isn’t the longest routine.

It’s knowing what your skin needs - and what it doesn’t.

The part of building something that nobody really prepares you for? How quiet it can be.

We celebrate the launches, the wins and the moments where everything finally seems to be falling into place. But we don’t always talk about the hundreds of ordinary days that came before them.

For a long time, I thought I needed to feel more ready. More qualified. More certain. Like eventually someone would give me the green light and I’d finally feel confident enough to go for it.

But I’ve learnt that confidence doesn’t always come before the decision. Sometimes it comes because you made the decision.

You start. You figure things out. You get things wrong. You learn. You change direction. And somewhere amongst all those very unglamorous Tuesdays, you realise you’re actually building the thing you once only thought about.

So this is for anyone waiting to feel 100% ready before they make the move.

You don’t need permission to want more for yourself. And you definitely don’t need to wait for someone else to choose you first.

Your skin doesn’t need more products. It needs the right ones, used consistently.

When we’re unhappy with our skin, the instinct is often to add something else. Another serum. Another active. Another product promising to fix the problem.

But skincare isn’t something you need to earn, and a complicated routine isn’t automatically a better one.

Think simple, intentional and specific to your skin.

AM: Cleanse. Treat. Protect.
PM: Cleanse. Repair. Rebuild.

Your evening routine is particularly important because your skin’s natural repair and renewal processes are active overnight - so what you use before bed deserves just as much thought as your morning routine.

You don’t need ten steps or a shelf full of serums doing variations of the same thing.

You need a routine where every product has a reason for being there.

Everyone told me to add fragrance. I kept saying no.

Because when I created these formulas, every ingredient needed to earn its place.

Fragrance can make skincare smell beautiful and feel luxurious - but it isn’t there to improve how your skin functions. And for some skin, particularly when the barrier is already compromised, it can be another potential source of irritation.

So I had a choice: formulate for the experience of opening the bottle, or formulate for the hours the product would spend on your skin.

I chose your skin. Every time.

No unnecessary extras. No ingredients added simply because they help something sell.

Just considered formulas, created with a purpose.

Because luxury skincare shouldn’t just feel good.

It should make sense for your skin.

Your skincare doesn’t need the active everyone is talking about. It needs the active that’s right for your skin.

Not your friend’s. Not TikTok’s. Not the one currently sitting at the top of everyone’s “must-have” list.

The right active should work with your skin, your barrier, your age and what’s happening hormonally right now.

And for many women over 30, that starts with finding the right acid.

The right acid, at the right concentration, used correctly, can help clear the way for the rest of your routine to work more effectively - but only when your skin barrier is healthy enough to support it.

It might not be the most glamorous skincare advice, but getting the foundations right can change everything.

Less guessing. More understanding your skin.

Is your skin purging… or are you simply doing too much? 👀

When breakouts appear after introducing a new active, it’s tempting to tell yourself you just need to “push through.” But sometimes, your skin is actually asking you to stop.

Pay attention to where you’re breaking out, how long it’s been happening and, most importantly, how your skin feels.

Tightness, stinging, burning and sudden sensitivity aren’t signs that your skincare is “working harder” - they can be signs that your barrier needs support.

And when that happens? More actives are rarely the answer.

Strip things back. Support your barrier. Give your skin time. Then reintroduce the right actives slowly and intentionally.

Because good skincare isn’t about how much you can put on your face.

It’s knowing when your skin needs more - and when it needs less.
