July is Disability Pride Month!

The fight for disability rights and the fight for size acceptance have never been separate.

Both ask the same question: Who gets to belong?

At I Slay, every member of our board lives in a plus-size body, and some of us also navigate visible and invisible disabilities. We know that the biggest barriers aren't always physical. They are the beliefs that some bodies deserve less access, less dignity, or less space.

As disability rights leader Judy Heumann reminded us, "Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives."

We believe that every body deserves to move through the world with safety, respect, and belonging.

Your body is not the problem.

The problem is a world that too often forgets to build with all of us in mind.

That's why we're here. To create community, challenge harmful narratives, and help build a future where every body is celebrated and free to belong.

This is probably the most asked-about event we’ve ever hosted, so let’s answer the biggest question…

“Why isn’t this a private pool party?”

Because our mission has always been bigger than creating hidden spaces.

We wanted to create an event that was:
☀️ financially accessible
☀️ physically accessible (Deep Eddy is ADA accessible)
☀️ welcoming to every body
☀️ easy for anyone to attend

Yes, we know being at a public pool can feel intimidating.

Body image struggles, anxiety, fear of judgment…those feelings are real, and if you’ve ever experienced them, you’re not alone.

But here’s what we also believe:

We shouldn’t have to hide our bodies to enjoy life.

We deserve sunshine.
We deserve friendship.
We deserve to laugh at the pool.
We deserve to take up space.

That’s exactly why I Slay exists.

We’re creating a judgment-free community where people can show up exactly as they are—whether you’re swimming, reading a book, tanning, floating, or simply sitting with new friends.

You never have to earn your place here.

You already belong.

A Note About Our July 11 Pool Social

I Slay is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our Pool Social is an official I Slay community event. While another plus-size social club is also hosting a pool gathering on the same day, these are two completely separate events with different organizers, locations, and purposes.

Our Pool Social was created with the same values that guide all of I Slay’s programming: accessibility, affordability, inclusion, and community.

As a nonprofit, every event we host is thoughtfully planned by our volunteer Board of Directors with the goal of creating experiences that are welcoming to all bodies and identities. We are committed to creating spaces where everyone feels safe, celebrated, and included. We also prioritize choosing venues that are ADA accommodating and financially accessible so that cost isn’t a barrier to participation.

The Board spent a great deal of time researching private pool venues for this event. While we would have loved to host the Pool Social at a private location, the cost would have made the event significantly less affordable for our community. After careful consideration, we chose a venue that allows us to stay true to our mission of providing an inclusive, accessible, and budget-friendly experience without compromising the quality of the event.

As a nonprofit, our focus has never been on simply selling tickets it’s on creating sustainable, inclusive programming that allows our community to gather, connect, build confidence, and thrive. Every decision we make is guided by that mission.

Whether you’ve been with me since 2009, from my body positive podcast & events or I Slay from the beginning or are joining us for the first time, we’re excited to spend the day together creating meaningful connections, celebrating ourselves, and continuing to build a community where everyone belongs.
