During a typical consultation at Little Lash Boutique for individual eyelash extensions whether they are synthetic, silk, or mink, we always go over the directions on taking care of the extensions. The key to keeping your individual eyelash extensions lasting longer is all in the aftercare. At Little Lash Boutique, we never change the type or brand of glue used on our clients. It is a medical-grade black adhesive that is very strong, but does not contain formaldehyde. By using a formaldehyde-free eyelash adhesive, I believe it is what keeps the client’s natural eyelashes from becoming too weak and fall out. I have seen client’s coming to me from “other places” (even though there’s nothing like LLB), with their natural eyelashes looking like they have been washed in some kind of acid. There were no gaps observed, but the tips of the person’s lashes were being eaten up by something. After getting several people from this “place” in New York City, I learned of the glue brand being used. I won’t say what it is because well, that’s not how I roll. Either way, lets learn how to take care of individual eyelash extensions.

I cannot stress this enough… Keep the individual eyelash extensions DRY for a minimum of 72 hours. Yes, 72. I have extended the directions on this so people can truly understand the importance. Before your eyelash appointment, make sure to wash your hair well. Not only will you not (or should not) wash your hair the next day, or even two days later, your eyelash technician will appreciate it. Your head is right under her nose after all. You don’t want your technician passing out while doing your extensions because she can no longer hold her breath. Two days before your appointment it is best to start prepping your own natural eyelashes by not wearing mascara, especially waterproof mascara. The cleaner your natural lashes are, the better job the technician can do at cleaning and priming your lashes. If you cannot go a day without mascara, at least wear a non-waterproof type. The night before your appointment, thoroughly clean your lashes (don’t forget to wash your hair) with an oil-free makeup remover. The day of your appointment, do not use any lotions on the eye area. This will directly affect the under eye gel pads that protect your lower eyelashes. The technician will usually request that the client does not wear makeup. A quick bit on “not wearing makeup.” That means, do not wear any makeup on the eyes or eye area even “invisible makeup!” Wearing eyebrow makeup is okay, but concealer and foundation under the eyes will only waste your time. The eyelash extensionist will have to remove the makeup under the eyes and then begin to do the regular eye prepping (if you are at Little Lash Boutique anyway). The process is already long, so instead of having your technician taking off makeup, just don’t come with any on and she can pack some more individuals on.

Keep your lashes dry for the first 72 hours. Don’t sleep on your face or pick at your lashes. Also, remember that individual eyelashes extensions are just that…. extensions of your natural eyelashes. They will cross.

A question we get all of the time, “can I go swimming with eyelash extensions?” Yes, you can, just not in the first 72 hours. The point of eyelash extensions is so you do not have to wear mascara.

Individual eyelash extensions

03/13/2014

Eyelash extensions are just that; Extensions of your natural eyelashes. Everyday the human eye should shed 3-5 natural lashes. Some experts even say to expect up to eight natural lashes to shed per day. The individual eyelash extensions are attached to the actual natural eyelash and not to the skin. The extension is applied using a friction method about one to two hairs thickness away from the lidline. Since natural eyelashes are programmed to grow up to a certain length, when it does grow off of the lid, the extension grows out with it. So when you are looking at your little friend in the sink one day, do not panic when you see a natural hair with it’s root. When the formaldehyde-free glue is applied correctly, your natural lashes will not become weak or ruined. This is why “cluster eyelash extensions,” “pieces,” or even a bad individual extensions job can make you go bald. If the cluster of lashes are attached to multiple natural lashes, then when one is ready to grow off today, that cluster is attached to other natural lashes that are not ready to grow off. Putting that much pressure on new growth and lashes that are not ready to shed will now be forced to fall out. That is when you hear about these horror stories of people losing their natural eyelashes. Not only will you lose your natural eyelashes you can get an eye infections, a stye, and even internal and external styes. It must be mentioned that even when individual eyelash extensions are applied correctly, if the wearer rubs his/her eyes excessively, damage to the natural lashes will accrue. This is the case whether there are extensions being worn or not.

Individual eyelash extensions are extensions of your natural eyelashes. Most people think they have only 20 eyelashes and do not realize that each and every natural eyelash is on it’s own growth cycle. One lash next to the other can be on totally different cycles. At about two weeks, you can expect about half of your individual eyelash extensions to shed off. The extensions do not fall off in clumps unless wet within the first 48 hours.
