On this day in 1946, the Executive Order was signed to release Japanese Americans from US concentration camps. Over 117,000 Japanese Americans were detained and incarcerated in what were called "relocation centers" or "Japanese internment camps". Even though the order was signed on June 25th, many individuals remained detained through December of 1946, and those that were able to return home found that their possessions, homes, and businesses were stolen or sold due to the inability to pay taxes while incarcerated. Despite all odds, Japanese Americans rebuilt their lives from nothing while facing societal prejudice and enduring unimaginable loss.

Our owners Michelle and Kitty are proudly Japanese American, and Michelle's grandparents and great grandparent generations (issei and nisei) were among those who were incarcerated and grew up in these camps. We would like to take a moment to reflect on this part of American history that is so rarely talked about, to honor those survivors and to remember that incarceration, detention, and forced relocation of American citizens is still happening today. Please take this day to celebrate what freedom means and educate yourself on the past and current times so that maybe we can prevent this in the future.
