Vocabulary lesson! 👇
Texture, density, and curl pattern are all components of each of our unique hair types, but they're often confused for one another!
Texture: Refers to the size/thickness of each individual hair strand. Texture is described as "fine," "medium," or "course." Fine hair having the smallest diameter, and course hair the largest.
Density: Refers to the number of hair follicles per square inch on the scalp. Density is described as "thin," "medium," or "thick." Density can be determined by the amount of scalp that is visible between hairs.
Curl pattern: Refers to the shape that the hair strand takes in its natural state, ranging from straight, to wavy, to curly, to coily.
ALL of these categorizations are a spectrum, and you can have ANY combination of the three.
For example: my hair is fine (skinny hair strand), medium density (average amount of hair per square inch), and wavy (loose, soft curl).
Often, people assume that, by default, curly hair (particularly tightly coiled hair) is "course," "unruly," "difficult," etc.
But that is so untrue!
Of course, it's possible to have course curls, but a lot of times the tightest curls and coils are baby fine! There are no "default" hair types, in which specific texture/density/curl patterns are mutually exclusive.
Natural curls are only considered "difficult" because straight hair has been glorified by our culture and society for so long. Keeping ANY hair type healthy and happy is hard work. We've just been conditioned to perceive curly hair as being "complicated" and "undesirable." (The root of this concept being racism and anti-blackness.)
So, your hair type is -any- combination of texture, density, and curl pattern. "Textured" is not a hair type. Literally every human who grows hair has "textured" hair of some sort.
Curly hair is not "textured" hair, it's just curly. 😌➿️
