Our team had the opportunity to lead a Caring for Your Heart + Culinary Nutrition Workshop for the incredible employees at Memphis Shelby County Schools (MSCS) ♥️
We explored how nutrition, culture and community come together to support heart health.
Through hands on culinary activities and real life discussion, participants learned how small, sustainable changes in can make a big impact on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, inflammation and overall well being.
With American Heart Month coming to an end, that doesn’t mean Heart Disease awareness should stop ❤️

As a woman of color owned healthcare business, we cannot stay silent about what we are seeing in our communities.
Our ancestors were once strangers on this land too - brought here to labor, to build and to survive in a country that did not protect them. The health of our families was shaped by systems of discrimination, bias, fear and limited access to care.
Because of that history, we feel a deep connection to what our Latine & immigrant neighbors are experiencing right now. We recognize the fear of not feeling safe in public spaces, the stress of uncertainty and the way these conditions directly affect health, access to food, and access to care.
Today, as American citizens and as healthcare providers, we also recognize the privilege we hold and we choose to use that privilege to speak up and to act.
At Feeding the Root Nutrition, this means creating a safe space for care:
🍉 We operate out of a private, locked office with scheduled appointments only.
🍉 We offer telehealth options for those who do not feel safe traveling.
🍉 We do not allow walk-ins or unapproved access to our building.
🍉 We provide care in Spanish & English.
It also means showing up beyond our walls. We are actively donating and volunteering with organizations in Memphis that support at-risk families, who provide legal resources, food access and protection for those who need it most.
We believe health is not just about what’s on your plate. It is about safety, dignity, and the conditions people are living in. As ethical healthcare workers, we cannot ignore the systems shaping our patients’ lives and simply tell them to eat more vegetables.
This is not political for us. It is human. It is health. & it’s our ethical responsibility.

We were on the news today! 📺🌱
Our dietitian and founder, Samaria Garrett, RDN, had the opportunity to speak with Alex Coleman on WREG News Channel 3 News Channel 3 at 3 to share expert insights on the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
A few key takeaways she shared:
• Eat more plants and fiber
• Full-fat dairy can be a great source of calcium, vitamin D, and potassium—nutrients many Americans don’t get enough of
• Ultra-processed foods aren’t automatically “bad”
• The Dietary Guidelines are not a strict meal plan
• Focus on high-quality protein sources that work for you
Most importantly, these guidelines are meant to be a framework, not rules. Working with a dietitian helps translate nutrition science into real life, individualized recommendations based on your preferences, culture, budget, health history, and needs.
Nutrition should support your life, not complicate it. 💚
