You are not a bad person because you’re tired.
You are not selfish because you finally have limits.
You are not weak because some things still hurt.
And you do not have to earn your worth by constantly taking care of everyone else.

You’re allowed to just be you for a little while. No fixing. No proving. No carrying everybody.

Something has really been weighing on my heart and I just need to say this.

Recently I got a text that said, “How do I hire someone like that?”

I’m not going to lie, that really hurt me. It hurt my soul.

I understand people have opinions, and I understand that I’m a business owner and I have to make decisions about who works for me. But what people may not understand is that I don’t just look at someone’s mistakes and decide that’s who they are.

The person I’m talking about is going through a really hard time in her life. She has struggled with alcohol, she has been to rehab, and she is going through a very difficult situation right now.

I’m not saying everything that happened is okay. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be responsible for their actions. Of course they should.

But I also believe there is more to a person than their worst moment.

People are very quick to judge when they don’t know the whole story. They see a mugshot, hear something happened, and suddenly they think they know everything about that person.

We don’t.

I’ve always been the kind of person who wants to help people when they are going through hard times. Anyone who knows me knows that. I don’t know how to just turn my back on someone when they are already at rock bottom.

But please don’t mistake my compassion for being careless.

I would never put my business, my employees, my customers, or anyone’s safety in jeopardy. I take that very seriously. If I ever felt that she was going to hurt herself or hurt someone else, that would be where I draw the line. There have to be boundaries, and I will always protect the people around me.

But as long as I believe someone is safe and is genuinely trying to get their life back on track, I’m willing to give them a chance.

Maybe some people would make a different decision than I would, and that’s okay.

But I believe people deserve chances.

I believe people can change.

I believe someone struggling with addiction is still a person. Someone who has made mistakes is still a person. Someone who has fallen really far can still get back up.

Sometimes having a job, having someone believe in you, and having a little bit of stability can be part of helping someone find their way again.

That doesn’t mean I’m ignoring what happened. It means I’m choosing to see the person too.

We all have our own demons. We all have things we’ve done that we’re not proud of. We all have moments we wish we could go back and change.

I know I would hope that if I ever hit a really low point in my life, someone would have enough compassion to see me as more than my worst mistake.

So when someone asks me, “How do I hire someone like that?”

My answer is simple.

I hire a person who is struggling and needs a chance.

I hire someone who I hope can turn their life around.

I hire someone who I believe is more than one bad chapter in their life.

I know I can’t fix anyone. I know people have to want to help themselves. But if I can give someone a little hope while they’re trying to find their way back, then I’m going to do that.

I would rather be the person who gave someone a chance than the person who judged them when they were already down.

We need a little more compassion in this world.

Please don’t judge someone’s entire life by one moment you saw.

You never know what someone is going through or how hard they are trying to get back up.

Be kind. Have compassion. Give people a chance when you can.

Sometimes that chance can mean more than you will ever know. ❤️
