In January 1811, hundreds of enslaved people rose up along Louisiana’s German Coast and began marching toward New Orleans in what became the largest organized uprising of enslaved people in U.S. history.
Led by Charles Deslondes and other freedom fighters, the rebellion grew as people moved from plantation to plantation. Their goal was freedom.
The uprising was eventually crushed by militia forces, and many participants were killed during the fighting or captured and executed afterward. Authorities brutally displayed the remains of executed rebels as a warning to others.
But more than 200 years later, their story is still being told.
They marched toward freedom—and refused to be forgotten.
