Alberto-Culver Company Tribute
The long-lost history of the Alberto-Culver Company This page recreates the old days when A-C introduced many new and innovative toiletries and niche foods.
Many of these are so rare that you can see them only on my A-C page.
Thank you for all the nice posts you sent to my FB page in the past two weeks.
Last night CNN broadcast a Broadway play about CBS News anchor Ed Murrow called "Good Night and Good Luck". He was going on the air to talk about Joseph McCarthy and his Communist issues. As the actor who played Murrow was waiting to go on the air, a CBS monitor in the studio showed an old 1950's commercial for A-C's Command Hair Groom. As a result, I didn't know that Command was in A-C's product line back in the '50's. I thought that they introduced it in 1962, but I now understand Command had a new formula when it was relaunched in 1962. So you can see I'm still learning more about A-C's products, and this discovery was well worth watching last night on CNN.

And here is the contents listing all the 1960's hair styles in this brochure--but no mention of any of A-C's products.

Hello. Here is the cover of a major Alberto-Culver artifact I bought recently on ebay along with photos of old A-C products I obtained on ebay in the last several years. It is a brochure from the mid-to-late 1960's (after the introduction of zip codes) called "Alberto-Culver's Imperial Hair Styling Instructions".
Coming soon: another rare piece of A-C advertising. Until then, I'll tell you that A-C was advertised as "The Market Makers" for introducing new products that created new categories for many products such as hair color, which they created with their early-'60's launch of New Dawn, the first shampoo-in hair color, and later, they again succeeded with a similar hair color product, For Brunettes Only, back in 1969.

In 1987, A-C's Consort line of men's grooming aids teamed up with The Sporting News to create the Consort Control Pitcher Award. As you'll see, it tells you how well the MLB's top pitchers have been doing.

Hello. I'm glad to see this ad for A-C telling the readers about the success of many of their brands. As you know, New Dawn started the hair coloring trend and in 1969 they followed it up with For Brunettes Only. That's why Alberto-Culver was referred to as "The Market Makers", making new products that created new markets for toiletries and some foods like Sugar Twin, also introduced in 1969.

This old 1960s ad by some aluminum maker showed many grocery and drugstore products, including VO5 Concentrate Shampoo in a plastic bottle.
In 1966, a big quest to get rid of B.O. came as A-C introduced FDS Deodorant Spray. It contained hexachlorophene, a proven germ killer at hospitals. Soon other companies followed A-C's lead, but a huge controversy came as a woman became allergic when she used FDS. Soon the government banned the use of hexachlorophene in personal care products, but it remained in use at hospitals.

Did you ever see this huge bottle of Rinse Away? It was probably used at beauty and barber shops back in the 1960s.
