When she told me she wanted Christine from Phantom of the Opera hair I said, say less! Long, dark, romantic curls BUT we had to get there in a way that made sense for her hair.

She has lower density so the goal was never to overload her with extensions. It was to meet her where she is. Plus add fullness + length while still protecting her natural hair and keeping the end result believable for her density.

She sent me this at her check-in:

“I honestly cannot tell the difference between my hair and the extensions…it’s basically just having more of my own hair.”

That was the goal❕

At CURLS IN REAL LIFE for the weekend, hanging out with the most talented curly stylists in the country. So obvi I can’t show up with my curls looking 👀….

Here’s a quick curl refresh utilizing the amazing product bag Savannah Hicks put together!

I used Bounce Curl | Wavy Curly Coily Hair Products leave in and water💧

I am low maintenance and so are a lot of my clients, therefore my advice is usually gonna lean that way. If you have more than a couple products you love using and want to spend your time finger coiling every curl, that’s fine too! That’s just not what I will be over here doing because it’s not realistic for me personally.

Your curl routine has to work for your actual life. Not somebody else’s. Do what works for you boo! 💞

One thing I’ve been loving about K-tips is that every removal teaches me something.

I’m always looking at what’s normal, what’s not, how the client’s natural hair is doing, and what healthy wear actually looks like.

Every client is different and I think that’s the fun part.

I was teaching my daughter how to detangle her curls the other day, and this is the exact same stuff we teach our clients.

Ya’ll know I’m always bout the education 👩🏾‍🎓

We don’t just want you leaving with great curls...we want you to know what to do once you’re back home.

And once kids are ready, we start teaching them too.

The important things:

➰ Hit a big tangle? Open it up with your fingers before you brush.

💦 Hair feeling dry? Add more water first. Most of the time you don’t need more conditioner...you need more water.

💫 Always work in sections. It makes detangling so much easier (don’t forget clips).

🪮 Brush from the bottom, then flip the brush over the top to make sure you’re getting all the way through. ESP on thick hair.

Healthy curls aren’t just about what happens in the salon. 90% of our job is to teach you how to take care of your hair when we’re not there. That’s when the real results happen.

A few years ago I added curly extensions to my business plan.

I thought it’d be a quick “find a vendor and let’s go.” LOFL!

Turns out… absolutely not.

I wanted something that blended with curls, looked natural, and gave options for clients who don’t always love wefts. Especially if they have finer or lower density hair.

I’ve spent the last couple years ordering hair, testing hair, taking classes, investing in education, working on models, and tbh being wayyy picky.

I’m a perfectionist when it comes to bringing a new service into the salon. If I’m putting my name on it, I want to know it works.

Taking Ester Yuabova K-tip education was a huge piece of the puzzle, and I finally feel like everything is coming together.

I’m really excited to keep creating with these because the possibilities are so good you guys!!! From filling in the sides to adding length and fullness without the bulk of a weft.

8 years of Salon Lola 🥂

Eight years ago I signed a lease that probably should’ve scared me more than it did 😂

I wasn’t trying to build what Salon Lola is today. I was just laying the next brick.

One client
One stylist
One class
One hard conversation
One system
One mistake
Lesson by lesson. Brick by freaking brick.

At the time, I just wanted to build the salon I couldn’t find.

A place where curly and textured hair wasn’t the “other” appointment.

Where education was actually part of the job

Where collaboration beat competition every time…

Where clients felt seen, and stylists felt supported!

Looking back, the walls aren’t what I’m most proud of.

It’s the people 🫶🏾

The clients who’ve trusted us with their hair and their confidence.

The stylists who’ve taken a chance on us, poured into this place, challenged us to grow, and helped make Salon Lola what it is today.

Eight years later, I’m still learning. Still evolving. Still laying bricks.

To every client, every stylist (past and present), every friend, family member, educator, and local business that’s been part of this journey… thank you. None of this happens alone.

I’m really proud of what we’ve built together.

And I’m even more excited for what’s next 👀
